Coming into this series, both teams’ goaltenders’ statistics had been unreal. Frederik Andersen had a 1.41 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. Moreover, Carter Hart had a 2.22 GAA with a .924 SV%. Now, three games into the Final series, we have had 25 goals scored all told. Going back 90 years, it is the fourth most goals to this point in a Cup final. In case you’re wondering, because we know you are, Andersen is now sporting a still very remarkable 1.89 GAA and a .910 SV%. Conversely, Hart is at a 2.44 GAA and a .915 SV%. The only thing saving the goaltenders’ numbers in this series is the extra time that has been played, as Game 2 saw an extra 3:56 and Game 3 it was 25:38.

Most combined goals through first 3 games of the #StanleyCup Final – last 90 years

1981 North Stars vs Islanders 30
1973 Black Hawks vs Canadiens 27
1980 Flyers vs Islanders 26
2026 Hurricanes vs Golden Knights 25

— Sportsnet Stats (@SNstats) June 7, 2026

The Goalies Are an NHL Predictions Storyline for Carolina Ahead of Game 4

Now, as we enter Game 4, the script has flipped, and the goaltending is in the storylines for an entirely different reason for those looking to make online hockey bets. Not only was Andersen possibly banged up from Game 3, he also got the yank. NHL rookie Brandon Bussi came on in relief, and if not for a very fortuitous bounce off of Bussi from a Shea Theodore point blast, he might not have been pegged with the loss, as he ultimately was for giving up the game-winning goal after a tremendous four-goal comeback was made by Carolina in the third period.

In any sense, as we enter gameday here this morning, there is no clear word on who head coach Rod Brind’Amour is throwing in between the pipes tonight. There were some rumblings yesterday, given the rotation seen in Hurricanes’ practice, that indeed Bussi would be busy in the crease again. However, it was made clear that it was a maintenance day for Andersen, so as to make no assumptions for who was getting the call.

In terms of other lineup news, and actually he is formerly an Original Misfit, but William Carrier‘s status is not clear for Game 4. Again, like the Canes’ starting goalie, it seems coach Brind’Amour is playing it up, and trying to build the anticipation, as fans are left in the dark until gameday, to know who’s in, and who’s out.

Stanley Cup Final History Was Made in Game 3

Shifting to the Golden Knights analysis for NHL Predictions. If Vegas does hold on to win the 2026 Stanley Cup, one of the great Stanley Cup Final performances ever, from Game 3 will live in infamy. Mitch Marner‘s natural hat trick, the fastest ever in a Stanley Cup series game (6:10), along with the first four-point period in the Finals, ever recorded, will likely earn Marner the Conn Smythe Trophy when it is all said and done. Now of course, if Carolina does prevail in the seven-game series, we might need to revisit that. However, after Game 3, and combined with his lead in playoff scoring, we think you can pencil Marner’s name in for the trophy, at this point. Imagine if Marner had scored on that penalty shot, early in the third period of Game 3?

Beyond Marner’s heroics, the series has given fans everything they could ask for. It is two powerhouse teams, laying it all on the line, with their skill shining through. And both teams have plenty of talent to go around.

Perhaps that is what head coach John Tortorella is really tapping into. As good as Carolina has been over recent memory, they have continually gotten to points in their respective playoff runs where their high-end scoring has essentially dried up. From their top offensive line of Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, and Seth Jarvis, neither of them are in the team’s top-four playoff point scorers. (Although we should point out Justin martinook has been swapped to play there for Jarvis). Yes, the terrific trio of Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake, and Logan Stankoven deserves all the credit in the world for powering Carolina this far along. But still, their top-end goal-scoring has seemed to dry up, like it has in the past. We will say that Jarvis’ big overtime winner in Game 2 was an attempt to change the narrative. But more needs to be done, and soon.

The High Scores Might Be Playing Into Vegas’ Hand

On the other hand, this might be exactly Torts’ strategy. Play the run-and-gun, shoot ’em style, and let the skill of his Golden Knights’ stars outshine that of Carolina. There is precedent as we have seen in the past with Carolina in the playoffs. It is just they have never made it this far, and as truly the class of the East. But now, that is all being put the ultimate litmus test, against those dangerous, diabolic desert dwellers.

No one has figured out how to slow down Marner. Similar ideas can be said for Brett Howden who leads the playoffs in goals with 13. Plus, studs like Tomas Hertl or Mark Stone are somewhat able to fly under the radar. Waiting for the eye of the Hurricane to come over, and when all appears calm, the swipe of a sword comes smashing down (or the smack of a stick on the puck, like Theodore did in Game 3 to end it). Therefore, John Tortorella’s gameplan of letting his stars out play the best from Carolina, if inadvertent or not, seems to be working.

NHL Predictions and Best Bets

Based on what we have seen so far, being in Vegas, and now adding a Carolina goaltending controversy into the mix, we would expect a high scoring contest once again. This one is hard to call, because with us siding with Vegas, that would put them up 3-1, might just seal the deal. But that is our call. Expect another close one, but we are taking Vegas in Game 4.

Prediction: Vegas 4, the Carolina Hurricanes 3, in regulation.

Best Bets

Who will be our classic anytime, goal-scorers you ask? We will take Mark Stone for Vegas. The best come to play this time of year, and after all, he is the captain of a strong Golden Knight squad. For Carolina, it is bordering on do-or-die. We think the veteran sniper Nikolaj Ehlers rises to the occasion.

Main Photo Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

Can we say it?
