This is when you put your money on the house in Vegas, and the oddsmakers come through, on time and with a smile, and what better way to come through if you are a Vegas fan right now? The Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes have been everything promised from two powerhouse teams throughout the league to square off in the Stanley Cup Final of the 2026 NHL playoffs. Tonight’s game was no different. Vegas and Shea Theodore wins it 5-4 at 5:38 of double overtime, ultimately preventing one of the most epic playoff collapses in NHL history. Let’s see how we got here.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBo0zG0pdK" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3326px; aspect-ratio: 3326/2217;" ></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Luis Santana/Tampa Bay Times via ZUMA Press Wire

Vegas Carolina Game 3 Stanley Cup Final Gives Clear Advantage

Coming into Game 3, Brayden McNabb‘s status did have a significant impact on the matchup game, as would be (at least) partially determined by head coach John Tortorella, given that he was the home team decision maker. It could have spelled more open ice for the Hurricanes top line of Andrei Svechnikov, Sebastian Aho, and Seth Jarvis, that had underperformed somewhat in these playoffs. In Game 2, they played less than three minutes together. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour looked to shuffle things around, as Justin Martinook found his way up with Aho and Svechnikov. Meanwhile, Jarvis shifts with Jordan Staal and Nikolaj Ehlers. This alignment would carry through for Game 3, as guys like Jarvis would hope for a breakout performance.

The fact that McNabb was out there with the full cage in pre-game warmups to protect a suspected an injury to the nose area, had to be seen as a huge boost to Vegas’ confidence. It took a while in Game 3, but it definitely seemed to have a positive impact on the Golden Knights’ game.

Game 3 Started Off Like a Defensive Showdown

Early in the first, McNabb did well to control Seth Jarvis and poke the puck off his stick. This showed he was able to keep up with the speed of the play. It helped him get his feet under him in Game 3.

Coming into Game 3, in terms of storylines, there was plenty undecided. As the Vegas Golden Knights had managed to earn the split in Raleigh, North Carolina, coming home, they had a chance to dictate play as the series wore on. Carolina Vegas Game 3 began with both teams not giving an inch, fighting fire with fire.

The goaltending had been so impactful coming into this game, despite that impact being that both teams have struggled, at times, this series. However, the same cannot be said for the playoffs as a whole, with both original starting goaltenders posting such great statistics.

As Game 3 played out, by the start of the third, Vegas had chased Frederik Andersen, and Brandon Bussi was making his NHL playoff debut. He was 32-6-1 in the regular season, but hadn’t seen the net yet this postseason. In the end, the spectacular play for the teams’ goaltenders was overshadowed by the bursts of offence. Although both teams had two shutout periods in regulation, and another in overtime, so it was a very tight game for long stretches.

Hurricanes have historically excelled away from the Lenovo Center this postseason#SoundTheSiren pic.twitter.com/Nhtyez9rNW

— Sportsnet Stats (@SNstats) June 6, 2026

Carolina was able to keep it close early, and one aspect was their uncanny abilities on the road this postseason. One way Carolina is able to offset home-ice advantage is by applying great pressure, throughout their four lines. Therefore, they can maintain consistent attack among its four lines. This prevents them from being held hostage by the matchup game. This didn’t seem to be making a great difference, perhaps until the second period rolled around.

A Period for the Ages for Marner and Vegas

As the second period began, it was impossible to know what to expect. What happened ended up as one of the great playoff performances in a Stanley Cup Final. Mitch Marner’s second period, natural hat trick, was the fastest ever (in 6:10 of game time) in Cup Final history. It broke the record going back to 1957 when Maurice Richard was 11 seconds slower to achieve the feat. In total, the four points for Marner in the period were truly an epic tale. Even though Brett Howden has been making his case to the final ballot, it seems Marner’s Game 3 heroics would likely seal the deal for a possible Conn Smythe Trophy nod, but there’s lots left to decide in this series.

Early in the third of Vegas Carolina Game 3, a penalty shot by Marner would’ve raised the roof right off the T-Mobile Arena. It was a huge test for the newly inserted Bussi, who did well to thwart Marner.

Then, a Hurricane Came Blowin’ Through

Within a couple minutes, Justin Martinook slid one in on Carter Hart. Talk about how dramatically things can all change. There was a melee that ensued, and gave the Hurricanes a big boost. Next it was Sebastian Aho winning a puck race and blindly throwing a backhander towards the net. Taylor Hall was able to finish it off. Moreover, the Canes did make it a one-goal game just moments later. 4-3, with lots of time left in the third period of action. The three goals by Carolina was the fastest since in 56 seconds, the 1954 Montreal Canadiens had scored three-straight goals in a Stanley Cup Final game. Carolina did it in just 39 seconds.

From NHL stats:

Mitch Marner (6:10) scored the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history, besting the previous mark of 6:21 set 69 years ago by Maurice Richard

— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) June 7, 2026

Seth Jarvis and Carolina were a bit unlucky, as a loose puck was swept over the glass for a late Vegas power play. Fortunately, Carolina was able to kill it off subsequently saving Jarvis from the humility of defeat, at least for the time being.

In a possible twist of fate, Shea Theodore just flipped a puck from behind his goal-line. However, it would carry right into the stands. It would be one last chance for Carolina to tie Game 3 late in regulation. As the man advantage went on, Carolina eventually pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, a 6-on-4 situation. Not long after, Jordan Staal shoved the puck to the net, and then Andrei Svechnikov came flying in to jamb it home, 4-4. Incredible, this is the playoffs, baby. The show must go on. After a controversial decision by Tortorella to challenge a late Carolina goal in Game 2, he decided against challenging, as there was quite the pile up in front. As if there wasn’t enough in Game 3, there was more ahead, as we were set for overtime.

Vegas Carolina Game 3 was the Golden Knights Game to Lose In the End

Overtime began fast, with teams hesitant to give up any room. It just seemed like, despite the attempted Carolina comeback, being at home in Game 3, this was Vegas’ game to lose. Vegas loaded up with Mark Stone, Mitch Marner, and Jack Eichel for a few offensive zone faceoffs, as the announcers joked Tortorella was trying to end it early. With all the chaos throughout the game, a shot of similar proportions to end it. Theodore slaps it wide and it bounces in, off the end boards, off Bussi and in. 5-4, game over from Nevada. The series is now shifted to Vegas’ favour, two-games-to-one, and both teams with two potential games remaining on home ice, if it goes seven. Game 4 goes Tuesday night, be sure to follow along for all your coverage.

This game has included:

* Two VGK goals taken off the board by coach's challenges
* Mitch Marner natural hat trick, fastest in SCF history
* Stopped Marner penalty shot that would have made it 5-0 in 3rd period
* Three Carolina goals in 39 seconds, fastest in SCF history

— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) June 7, 2026

Main Photo Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

Vegas Carolina Game 3 from the 2026 Stanley Cup Final delivered on all its promises, overtime, where would you rather be on a Saturday night?
