Alternatively, with the Carolina Hurricanes and their identity of tenacity and reflection in their play of their head coach, Rod Brind’Amour’s style, prove too much for them to handle? As they say, it is the hardest trophy to win in sports. This is the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

NHL Predictions, Game 1, Hurricanes and Golden Knights

How to Watch: ABC, Sportsnet, CBC, TVA Sports

Puck Drop: 8:00 p.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) || 5:00 p.m. PDT (Pacific Daylight Time)

Venue: The always rowdy Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBo0zG0pdK" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3326px; aspect-ratio: 3326/2217;" ></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Luis Santana/Tampa Bay Times via ZUMA Press Wire

We do need to touch on how we got here. For Carolina, they have absolutely rolled to get to this point. Their only loss these playoffs came in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final versus the Montreal Canadiens (6-2). The Habs were able to take advantage of the rust, as that had been Carolina’s first game in 12 days. Amazingly, that is the only game the Hurricanes surrendered more than two goals, as they have outscored their opposition 42-21 throughout these playoffs.

Vegas’ path to the final hasn’t been quite so dominant. However, the fact that they swept the Presidents’ Trophy winning Colorado Avalanche does cue them up quite well for this matchup. Overall, Vegas went 12-4, outscoring their foes 58-38. In total, the two teams have appeared in eight (five for Carolina) overtime games this postseason, and haven’t lost. Even if there is an element of luck involved, you still have create your own breaks, and take advantage of them when the moment so presents itself. Timing.

A quick note on the regular season series, and that occurred in a little over a week, way back in October. Vegas outscored them a combined 10-4 in two games, and Akira Schmid saw the net both times. The first game was actually Carolina’s first loss of the season after having started 5-0 in 2025-26. We can chaulk it up to being tired from an early season Western road-trip.

How About Them Hurricanes

We think we have to discuss Logan Stankoven. He leads the Hurricanes in shots on goal in these playoffs with 46. Andrei Svechnikov is second with 43. However, Stankoven has been converting them, with nine tucks in 13 games. Tied for second at five for Carolina in the postseason is Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake.

Carolina comes at you in waves. They can beat you with any of their four lines. Whether it is Nikolaj Ehlers or Sebastian Aho, you never know who will land that fatal blow. If you aren’t ready for their relentless pressure, you will be swept away like chips on the craps table.

Playing With House Money On NHL Predictions

Speaking of gambling, Vegas. The Sin City. The big name for the Vegas Golden Knights has to be Mitch Marner. At this point, and according to the sportbooks, he is far and away Vegas’ Conn Smythe Trophy favourite. He is right up there with someone we will mention later.

For Marner, at 28 years old, he is proving in 2026, just how great of a playoff performer he can be. He leads the playoffs with 21 points (seven goals and 14 assists). Furthermore, in his career, he is up to 84 points in 86 career games, and has an average ice time of 21:44. When you put it all together, he has had a remarkable career, postseason performances included.

Vegas has lots of firepower to spare behind Marner. Pavel Dorofeyev and Brett Howden are each currently tied for the playoff lead in goals with ten each. And let’s not forget superstar Jack Eichel is there, too. He currently leads the Stanley Cup Playoffs in assists (16). Moreover, these are the guys that are leading the team in shots. You can throw Shea Theodore in the mix too, as he is fourth on the team with 31 shots on goal this postseason.

The Goalies

One of the initial controversaries coming into the 2026 playoffs, was the Hurricanes net. However, those questions have long been erased. Between the skill of Brandon Bussi and the veteran savvy of Frederik Andersen, siding with the Dane was the right choice. He is 12-1 to this point in the postseason, with a miniscule 1.41 goals-against average, a .931 save percentage, and three shutouts. Furthermore, he has been doing it for a long time. His career playoff record is 58-36, and there’s no reason to think his experience can power the Canes to another four wins this season. Finally, we will add that Andersen is the other favourite to win the Conn Smythe, that we referenced earlier.

In goal for the Golden Knights, is definitely one of the pleasant surprises of the playoffs, in Carter Hart. Hart is 12-4 in a postseason, that followed up an 11-3-3 run in the regular season. He has a 2.22 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage this postseason, and gives the Golden Knights an excellent competitor to face-off against Andersen.

However, we do like to remind people to check the very latest from social media, before locking in your rosters.

NHL Predictions and Best Bets

We will mention the power plays briefly. Vegas is strong at 23.9% these playoffs, and Carolina is not nearly as good at 12.5%. In contrast, this disparity is offset by the penalty kills. Carolina is 92.5% efficient, while Vegas is still very strong, but down to 87.5%. In any case, we don’t anticipate this being a differentiator in the seven-game series. Teams tend to play with discipline and restraint this time of year, when it comes to after the whistle shenanigans. Also, the refs do tend to put the whistle away, between the whistles. Expect a fierce showdown, between two well-coached teams, that have talent to burn.

We think Carolina rides the momentum of home-ice advantage for Game 1. However, do not expect a blowout, as a Tortorella-coached squad will be 100% prepared for the wrath of the eye of the Hurricane.

Prediction: Hurricanes over the Golden Knights 3-2, in regulation.

Best Bets

If you want to parlay your game result money line with a couple of anytime goal scorers, you might find yourself the life of the Stanley Cup party. We like Stankoven to find twine for Carolina. Meanwhile, we say take Dorofeyev to fill the net.

Main Photo Credit: James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

The 2026 Stanley Cup Final is descending on the sporting world from the Carolinas, and this is the Game 1 edition of NHL Predictions with the folks here at Last Word On Hockey.
