He also has previous experience with the Vancouver Canucks organization, as he was an assistant coach under Travis Green from 2017 to 2020. Malhotra was also the assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2020 to 2024, returning to the Canucks organization after the end of the 2023-24 season.

Given that the priority for the team at the moment is less on the on-ice results and more on developing young players, Malhotra is a good fit. While he has no prior NHL head coaching experience, he has proven that he is well-spoken, well-liked by players, and a good bet for leading Vancouver through its rebuild. “Manny and I have been in the battle together before, so I know firsthand what a good teacher, leader, and quality person he is,” said Johnson in a press release.

Familiarity With Sedins and Johnson Might Be Key

An issue that the Canucks had in previous years was a lack of a shared vision between management and the coach. For example, when Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin were hired, they were not on the same wavelength as the head coach at the time, Bruce Boudreau. That led to a drawn-out process of Boudreau being a lame-duck coach, eventually leading to his firing. This time, the Canucks have allowed the new front office to decide who the coach they want is. Malhotra had worked with both the Sedins and Ryan Johnson in Abbotsford. The Sedins were involved as development coaches, and Johnson was the Abbotsford GM before being promoted.

What Does This Mean For the Upcoming NHL Entry Draft?

A big storyline would be if hiring Malhotra would mean that they would pass on drafting Caleb Malhotra with their third overall draft pick. The history of fathers coaching their sons in the NHL is a small one, with only a handful of instances where it has occurred. It can be a distraction in the locker room, and nepotism can creep up. Johnson has mentioned that it would not be a factor in the front office’s decision-making, but nonetheless, it has to be a topic of discussion internally.

So, Why Did It Take This Long To Announce This?

Ryan Johnson has not been shy about his interest in Malhotra for the head coaching position. “Manny has shown his ability to develop young players, to build a connection, and obviously win a championship with a very young group,” said Johnson. Given that, some fans may be surprised at how long this process took. The Canucks management will be at the NHL Scouting Combine from June 1 to June 6, and it would have been fitting to have announced the new coaching staff before then.

There is the discussion of hiring Malhotra’s son, Caleb, which the team obviously had to straighten out before deciding that Malhotra would be the next coach. Next, there is the economics side of it. The Canucks have been known to be a bit stingy when it comes to hiring new staff, which may have slowed down negotiations at times. Finally, Malhotra is also a highly sought-after coach, period. He was involved in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ organization as an assistant coach from 2020 to 2024, and was reportedly part of their coaching search.

The new management team has likely made a lot of Canucks fans hopeful and happy, but there is still plenty of work to be done as the rebuild gets underway. Johnson will speak to the media on Tuesday morning, while Malhotra will be made available later this week.

Main Photo Credit: Andy Abeyta/The Desert Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks have made things official. Manny Malhotra has been named the 23rd head coach in franchise history, following the massive changes in the front office and coaching staff. Malhotra will be tasked with leading the Canucks through the rebuild, with plenty of young players, as well as players he previously coached on the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks roster.
