The Canadiens dominated the Hurricanes in Game 1, defeating them 6-2 in a game where Carolina looked to be rusty after a long layoff. However, Carolina we’re back to normal in Game 2, outshooting the Canadiens 26-12, defeating them 3-2 in overtime. Now heading into Game 3 in Montreal, the Canadiens are looking to take advantage of home ice to take the lead in the series, while the Hurricanes are looking to keep the momentum going from their Game 2 win and quiet the crowd at the Bell Centre.

The Canadiens Story

The Canadiens went into Carolina and essentially came out of it with a perfect scenario if we’re thinking realistically. The chances of taking two on the road from the team that just went 8-0 before this series was slim to none. What the Canadiens did was show the Hurricanes that they are the real deal by thumping them in the first game and dragging them to overtime in Game 2. Now the Canadiens are headed back home with the series tied and now hold home ice advantage for what can be looked at as a best of five.

Jakub Dobes continued his outstanding play during these Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting a goals-against average of 2.43 and a save percentage of .907 in the first two games of the series. Dobes was a big reason the Canadiens were able to get to overtime in Game 2, as the Hurricanes heavily outshot the Canadiens in the game. Dobes made an incredible blocker save to keep the Canadiens within one in the third period, which helped rally the squad to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Jakub Dobeš with a HUGE save to keep it a one-goal game 🙅‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/Opi8EEUwHL

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) May 24, 2026

After Juraj Slafkovsky led the way in Game 1, scoring two goals and adding an assist, and his line with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki secured eight points, it was Josh Anderson who brought the offence in Game 2, scoring both goals for the Canadiens. The Canadiens will want the top line to get back to their scoring ways in Game 3 to try to take a 2-1 series lead. They will also hope that Lane Hutson will be playing at or near 100% after taking a hit in Game 2, which left him looking like he was in a bit of discomfort. Hutson is a major reason the Canadiens have been so successful during the playoffs.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBZILvibfe" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3600px; aspect-ratio: 3600/2400;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Hurricanes Story

The Hurricanes showed signs of rust in Game 1, which was to be expected as they sat and waited for 12 days to see who they would be playing in the Eastern Conference Final. Frederik Andersen finally came back to earth after ridiculous numbers through the first two series, with a goals-against average of 1.12 and a save percentage of .950. Andersen hasn’t been nearly as sharp in two games against the Canadiens, posting a 3.48 goals-against average and a .788 save percentage. If the Hurricanes have any chance of winning this series, they’ll need to get better goaltending from Andersen.

Offensively, it’s been Eric Robinson and Nikolaj Ehlers leading the charge for the Hurricanes. Eric Robinson scored his first two goals of the playoffs against the Canadiens, potting one in each game. But it was Ehlers who got the job done for the Hurricanes in Game 2. Ehlers made a beautiful move to beat the defenders and put one past Dobes to take a 2-1 lead in the second, and then ripped one home in overtime to tie the series 1-1.

EHLERS FIRST TEAM ALL HANDS GOAL TO TAKE THE LEAD 😱🚨 pic.twitter.com/lkYzscOSSR

— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 24, 2026

The line of Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake has been quiet so far during the series, after leading the way for the Canes in the first two rounds. They’re currently the top three in scoring for the Hurricanes, but have yet to register a point in this series. They’ll also need more from Sebastian Aho going forward, as he has one point in this series and just five points in 10 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Prediction and Best Bets

As the teams head back to Montreal, we expect a tightly contested game now that the two teams have been able to feel each other out in Carolina. The Hurricanes fans were exceptionally loud in Game 2, helping rally the troops to secure a 3-2 overtime win against the Canadiens. However, they now enter the always tough-to-play-in Bell Centre in Montreal. The fans in Montreal have been waiting to see their Canadiens back in action at home since the 8-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres in Game 6 of their second-round series. The Canadiens will be eager to show up for their fans and redeem themselves from the poor performance they showed at home their last time in the Bell Centre.

Coming off a loss to the Hurricanes, they’ll be extra hungry. And as we know, the Canadiens have yet to lose two in a row during the playoffs, going a perfect 6-0. We expect the streak to continue tonight.

Prediction: Canadiens win 4-2

Best Bets

For our best bets on the Canadiens side, look for Ivan Demidov to record at least one point in the game (-110). Demidov has been starting to heat up and has four points in his last five games. After being held off the score sheet in Game 2, expect him to get right back to his scoring ways in this one.

On the Hurricanes’ side, we like Nikolaj Ehlers as an anytime goal scorer at (+245). Ehlers was outstanding in the last game against the Canadiens and now has four goals in his last five games. Expect him to light the lamp again in this one.

Main Photo: James Guillory-Imagn Images

Welcome back to NHL Predictions.
