It’s time for another round of NHL rumours. We’re knee deep into the Stanley Cup Final, but there’s plenty of hot stove chatter to go around. We’ve already seen a few clubs make wholesale changes to their respective roster and front office. However, some of these teams are from done in their makeover. There are still some important decisions to be made as we approach the start of the offseason .<\/p>\n
One team that has to make another important decision is the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. This edition of NHL rumours deals with the latest on the team’s head coaching search.<\/p>\n Rumour: We offer the latest update on where things stand on the Leafs head coaching search. Some new names have emerged as possible candidates or have even been interviewed.<\/em><\/p>\n Analysis:<\/em> We’ll start off with one name that won’t be taking the post and that’s Jay Leach<\/a>. The Boston Bruins<\/a> assistant took the head coaching job with the Hartford Wolf Pack, who are the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers. Leach’s name was mentioned in a previous edition of NHL rumours.<\/a> While Leach may be gone, there are plenty of other names that have popped up.<\/p>\n David Pagnotta appeared on the Daily Faceoff Rundown,<\/em><\/a> and he said that former Anaheim Ducks<\/a> head coach Dallas Eakins<\/a> interviewed with the team. Eakins only had a short tenure with the Ducks but is the type of coach that would install structure into the roster.<\/p>\n Elliotte Friedman recently appeared on the FAN Hockey Show and said that Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> assistant coach Jeff Halpern<\/a> was interviewed. However, Halpern was informed that he would not be advancing<\/a> the next round. It seems that the former NHLer will have to wait longer for his first NHL head coaching gig.<\/p>\n There are a couple of former NHL head coaches that were also recently put in the mix. However, there’s one name that would take Maple Leafs’ fans by surprise.<\/p>\n Credit Image: \u00a9 Alan Schwartz\/Cal Sport Media)<\/em><\/p>\n Friedman mentioned in a recent edition of 32 Thoughts<\/a> <\/em>that Peter Laviolette<\/a> was in the mix for the Leafs head coaching job. The veteran head coach guided the Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> to the Stanley Cup in 2006 and has reached the final with the Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> and the Nashville Predators<\/a>. He’s had some unceremonious ends to some coaching tenures. However, he’s a solid players coach.<\/p>\n In the same edition of 32 Thoughts, Friedman mentioned that Denver University head coach David Carle is out of the mix for the job. He was mentioned in previous editions of NHL rumours. New general manager John Chayka took a run at Carle, but it looks like the national championship-winning coach is staying in the collegiate ranks.<\/p>\n Carle has been lauded as a solid developer of talent. However, one other name that has been regarded as someone that’s helped young players emerge. He also has a history of being a part of Toronto’s greatest rival.<\/p>\n Friedman mentioned that the Leafs and Patrick Roy<\/a> have also spoken to each other. Roy is a former NHL head coach but is well-respected from his time in the QMJHL with the Quebec Remparts. He helped develop a team that was a consistent contender. It would be interesting to see a former Montreal Canadiens<\/a> great guiding the Maple Leafs. Sportsnet’s Friedman also appeared on the FAN Hockey Show<\/a> and added that Roy interviewed really well.<\/p>\n The Sportsnet insider also made an appearance on the Oilers Now<\/a><\/em> show and added that Toronto would have been interested in Jared Bednar had the Colorado Avalanche<\/a> fired him. However, Bednar is staying put in Denver for now.
