Could they find a way to score quickly and make it a 3-0 game, or risk a repeat of Sunday night.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB4dJSDT1J" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2610;" ></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Anthony Nesmith/Cal Sport Media

Fans pulling for the Bruins didn’t need to worry so much. Boston went on the power play and Pavel Zacha scored on a tip-in at 18:10 to make it 3-0. But against a Sabres team that put up four unanswered goals in a single period on Sunday before Boston scored one more with just eight seconds left? The test was far from over when the two teams went into the locker rooms for the second intermission.

Buffalo finished with the fifth-highest goal total in hockey and proved it could score on anyone. The Sabres had also scored four goals on the Bruins once in the regular season and took games to overtime twice. In those two overtime games, Buffalo scored three times. In short, the Sabres proved just how formidable of an opponent they are against the Bruins.

Then it took Viktor Arvidsson just 16 seconds into the third period to put the fans at ease. He scored off a snap shot with helpers from Casey Mittelstadt and Jonathan Aspirot to put the Bruins in control. Heading into the back half of the third period, the Bruins still kept the Sabres off the board until the 13:54 mark. But by then it was too late. Buffalo scored twice, but Boston refused to let them regain momentum.

Bruins Needed a Convincing Win like this to Rebuild Momentum

The stakes are at their highest in playoff hockey. One bad period can cost a team more than a game. Especially after blowing a lead so late on Sunday in a contest that saw the Bruins outplay Buffalo for the first 40-plus minutes.

The question isn’t always, how will a team like the Bruins respond after blowing a multiple-goal lead? It’s also, how much momentum will the Sabres have on Tuesday night after scoring four times in a single period? When the Sabres couldn’t capitalize despite creating chances of their own in the first period on Tuesday, it left the door open for the Bruins.

Now with the series headed to Boston, momentum is in the Bruins corner. More good news for the Bruins is that they beat the Sabres in both meetings at the TD Garden. Now that they have home-ice advantage, the Bruins have every opportunity to take a commanding lead over Buffalo.

That could easily be the case, considering how much playoff experience this group has over the Sabres. Still, it also poses another challenge for the Bruins. That challenge is not to get too comfortable with the home-ice advantage and discrepancy in experience.

If they do, then the Sabres will hurt them, as Buffalo proved in Game 1. So it’s up to the Bruins to keep proving the point they drove home in Game 2. A point that they can play three full periods of dominant hockey.

Main Photo Credit: Timothy T.
