The NHL announced that there will be best-on-best hockey in about two years’ time. The announcement is that the 2028 World Cup of Hockey is scheduled for February of 2028. Furthermore, the NHL targeted three locations as hosts. One of the venues will be in Europe, the always boisterous O2 Arena, home of HC Sparta Prague of Czechia’s Extraliga, in Prague, Czechia. The arena is the third-largest ice hockey arena in Europe. Next, there will be two host cities in Alberta, Canada, one of them being Edmonton and the other just down the road in Calgary. Let’s discuss.

The 2028 World Cup of Hockey Coming to Alberta and Czechia
<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBY664Yg4b" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

<smartframe-embed customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBY664Yg4b" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 1.5 / 1; --canvas-wedge-error-size: 6000; --sf-original-width: 6000; --sf-original-height: 4000; --sf-is-portrait: 0; --sf-is-landscape: 1;" preview-mode="" tabindex="0"></smartframe-embed>

Credit Image: © Paul Kitagaki Jr./ZUMA Press Wire

Now for some of the specifics of the venues. One-half of the round robin tournament will be played in Czechia. Moreover, this tournament allows the hockey world to see the brand new, state-of-the-art Scotia Place in Calgary, Alberta. As of now, the arena is scheduled to be ready for the fall of 2027. Finally, the semifinals and finals of the tournament will be played in none other than the City of Champions. That would also be known as Edmonton, Alberta, at their Rogers Place.

We will add the NHL did a great job of the announcement. Using the top players as ambassadors for the game, was a great move. You know the names of David Pastrnak, Cale Makar, and Connor McDavid, will be front-and-centre in the tournament in two years time.

There are some notes on the format, as well. The top-three teams in each four-team round Robin pool advance to the playoff round. Furthermore, the second and third-place teams play, with the winners advancing to the semifinals. Also, when it comes to overtime in the championship game, it will be regular 5v5 action.

Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague will be the hosts for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey! #WCOH pic.twitter.com/gh7nR1Eopp

— NHL (@NHL) March 16, 2026

The World Cup of Hockey History and Stories

As hockey fans, players, historians, and anyone that follows it really know, the history of best-on-best hockey tournaments has a bit of a volatile history. Between the timing, perhaps traveling, affecting the NHL gameplay, and also geo-political issues, it has been hard to find consistency in the scheduling of these types of tournaments.

Originally, these tournaments simply went under the moniker of the Canada Cup. The tournaments in 1976, 1981, 1984, 1987, and 1991 followed that format. It was a way of having NHLers involved in international hockey. Moreover, back when that tournament was beginning, Canada had been skipping some big international competitions in dispute of not having their best players allowed to participate. The Olympics being one of the main examples.

Best-on-Best is Best for Fans and Players, Too

The 1976 tournament was aimed at a reconciliation, and to bring everyone together. Overall, between the Olympics, and the switch to the name of World Cup of Hockey, it has been fairly effective. NHLers have now played in the 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2026 Winter Olympics. In addition, there have been World Cups in 1996, 2004, 2016, and now 2028. So, going back to 1976, that is some 50 years now, we have had 14 best-on-best tournaments.

Therefore, if you consider it, the gap between the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, was the longest the hockey had gone between best-on-best tournaments, since that first tournament back in 1976.

But it seems the players and most importantly the league are committed to having these things regularly scheduled. Hockey fans feel left out when we don’t get to see our best players participate at the Olympics, or have to wait 12 years for a World Cup. That’s not to mention the players. These type of tournaments bring together the best talent in the world, playing for everything, fighting for their country. It is hard to match the emotion and intensity of these games, you know, short of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Canada Beats Russia For Gold At The 2020 World Junior Hockey Championships

NHL rules used in World Cup of Hockey: so it will NOT be 3 on 3 OT in championship game.
