NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported on his 32 Thoughts Podcast Monday that he was likely to re-sign with the Mammoth. However, it was a debate about the term, not money. Now, it seems Schmaltz and Utah have come to an agreement that both sides are satisfied with the terms.

This is the final year of Schmaltz’s current seven-year contract, so he would’ve been eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer. The Mammoth lock up an important piece of their team long-term as the rebuild winds down.

Schmaltz Having Career-Year Offensively for the Mammoth

Schmaltz is having a terrific 2025-26 year. In 65 games, the 30-year-old set a new career high in goals (24) and has 35 assists. He’s also on pace to break his career high in points (63) set last season. Schmaltz currently has 59.

The extension comes as the Mammoth are right in the middle of a final Stanley Cup Playoff push for this season. Utah’s attempting to qualify for the first time in franchise history. Moreover, they’re currently in the first Western Conference Wild Card playoff spot.

“There was never a doubt that Utah is where I want to play the rest of my career and I’m thrilled to sign an eight-year extension,” Schmaltz said after re-signing. “We have a great core of players and I know we can do some special things together here in Utah.”

The centre/winger is now the eighth player on the Mammoth roster to have at least four years remaining on their current contracts. That includes recently-acquired defenceman MacKenzie Weegar.

As for Schmaltz, he was originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks. That was back in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He was selected in the first round of that year’s draft, 20th overall. Moreover, the Arizona Coyotes franchise acquired Schmaltz via trade, back in November of 2018. The deal saw Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini go the other way.

Main Photo: James Guillory-Imagn Images

The Utah Mammoth have some exciting news to announce today.
