Many speculated that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howarja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jimmy Howard<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/02\/17\/nhl-rumor-round-up-tomas-tatar-jimmy-howard-boone-jenner\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">would have been traded<\/a> at the 2019 deadline. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bernijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Bernier<\/a> <\/strong>was signed as a veteran backup that could have stepped in if Howard was dealt. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, Bernier faltered, and Howard <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/03\/20\/detroit-red-wings-sign-jimmy-howard-to-a-one-year-extension\/\" target=\"_self\">was re-signed to a one-year extension<\/a>. Detroit does have Filip Larsson <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/04\/15\/filip-larsson-detroit-red-wings-net\/\" target=\"_self\">ready to compete for a starting spot<\/a> in Grand Rapids of the AHL. The Ogdensburg, New York native went 23-22-5 with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a 3.07 goals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> against average and .909 save percentage. Those numbers are a little deceptive considering the team\u2019s defensive struggles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Detroit could have gotten something for Howard, but then general manager<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a><\/strong> gave him the contract extension.
