With the Blue Jackets re-signing the 34-year-old centre, he will be 40 at the contract’s expiration. The deal carries with it a $6 million average annual value.

Coyle brings stability and structure to Columbus’ middle six during his tenure, thus far. Clearly he brings the type of veteran presence general manager Don Waddell values.

What Coyle Brings to the Locker Room

Charlie Coyle’s value lies in the details. A veteran net-driving centre, he does much of his offensive work within a few feet of the crease. His hands in tight allow him to finish deflections and capitalize on cross-crease opportunities, and his 81st percentile finishing rate reflects that strength. At even strength, he grades comfortably above league average offensively, while his defensive impact sits around the middle tier.

This past season, Coyle has recorded 20 goals and 38 assists in a full, 82-game season. He is not a primary power play catalyst, but he handles five-on-five responsibilities effectively and frequently draws difficult assignments. Moreover, he has historically performed well in Stanley Cup Playoff environments, showing comfort in structured, physical series. If Columbus is to take a step during his tenure there, he certainly can contribute.

While an average straight-line skater, the former first-round pick compensates with puck protection, body positioning, and awareness. Teams up against Coyle have to deal with a reliable middle-six option capable of absorbing matchup minutes.

Around the trade deadline he was Number 11 on The Athletic’s trade board. But now it looks like he will be staying put, and won’t have to worry about these rumours in the future.

This contract is fair market value, reinforcing his reputation as a reliable middle-six contributor. With positive offensive and defensive impact ratings, he profiles as a steady addition rather than a headline-grabbing acquisition. His experience in structured systems makes him a stabilizing piece.

Columbus goal!Scored by Charlie Coyle with 18:37 remaining in the 2nd period.Chicago: 1Columbus: 2#CBJvsCHI #Blackhawks #CBJ

— NHL Goals (@nhlgoals.bsky.social) 2026-01-31T02:44:13.251636Z

Main Photo Credit: Matt Marton-Imagn Images

The Columbus Blue Jackets rewarded their veteran centre as a Charlie Coyle contract extension is in the news.
