However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2026\/01\/30\/nhl-rumours-extension-talks-with-carolina-hurricanes-goalie\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> have taken care of some business during the break. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/hurricanes\/news\/canes-sign-bussi-to-three-year-extension\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News emerged<\/a> on Monday afternoon that goalie <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bussibr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-16_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Bussi<\/a> has signed a contract extension. The deal is for three seasons and will be for a total value of $5.7 million for the life of the deal. The 27-year-old has a 23-3-1 record with a 2.16 goals-against-average. He also has a .906 save percentage and two shutouts so far this campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The Sound Beach, New York native was a veteran of the AHL before this season. He played in 111 career games, where he played with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2026\/02\/01\/nhl-predictions-boston-bruins-tampa-bay-lightning-stadium-series\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> AHL affiliate in Providence. Bussi was a standout netminder with Western Michigan of the NCAA. He <span>46-25-5 with a 2.61 goals-against average and .910 save percentage. However, he went undrafted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the opportunity at the NHL level this season, he\u2019s proven to be a winner here too,&#8221; said Canes General Manager Eric Tulsky. &#8220;We are thrilled that he will continue to provide a steady presence in the crease for this team into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What It Means<\/h3>\n<p>Carolina had some worry about its crease after Pyotr <span>Kochetkov was lost for the rest of the season due to injury. However, Bussi has stabilized things and given the Hurricanes freedom to pursue other options at the trade deadline. I<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll be interesting to see how Bussi does when the Stanley Cup Playoffs roll around. However, the Hurricanes do have a seemingly solid tandem with Bussi and veteran goalie <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderfr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-16_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederik Andersen<\/a>.
