Canada breezed through the preliminary round. Moreover, they did so well, that they were able to drive their goal differential high enough to secure an easier first-round playoff matchup. We use the term easier quite loosely, as many heavy favourites have found themselves trailing in games in this tournament, well into games, too. One example of that was the France and Czechia game, that saw France lead until David Pastrnak scored to tie it at three, with just 6:37 to go in the second period. Czechia did go on to win that one by a score of 6-3. However, the point was hammered home, this is a short tournament, and these teams are good, especially when you consider many of their goaltenders being at, or very near, the NHL level. But we are here to discuss Canada, and some notes prior to the tournament continuing early on Tuesday.

Canada and the Rest of the Teams Olympics Hockey States and Standings

Coming into the tournament, Canada and the USA were considered favourites. Oddsmakers definitely had them above the rest. Furthermore, Sweden and Finland would’ve found themselves in the next tier. That would be followed by Czechia, in terms of favourites to claim the Gold Medal prize. Teams like Denmark, Latvia, Switzerland, Germany, and Slovakia, would see themselves at the next level, but probably not competing for gold, in the end. In any case, throughout the tournament so far, the cream of the crop has risen to the top.

The preliminary round ended Sunday with Canada defeating France by a score of 10-2. Meanwhile, USA skated past Germany 5-1. This meant that Canada was awarded the top seed going into the playoff round. They ended the first three games of competition with a +17 goal differential. In contrast, the States only managed a +11 differential. Finland did match that amount, but they had to overcome a 4-1 loss to Slovakia in their opener.

Regardless, Canada won the top seed, that allows them to await the winner of Czechia and Denmark qualification round matchup. They already beat Czechia comfortably, 5-0, in their tournament opener. On the other hand, Denmark finished the tournament 1-0-2-0, with a minus three goal differential. So, they would be considered an easier opponent, if Canada ends up facing off against them. Still, even they hung around in the game against the Americans. Denmark was winning 2-1 until Jack Eichel had tied it up around the halfway mark of the second period, and then they would never look back. However, that ended up being a costly game for the Americans if they wanted to indeed pass Canada’s goal differential standing. USA awaits a potentially much more difficult opponent in their quarterfinal matchup, with them getting the Sweden/Latvia winner.

Game times:

Tues. Near the end of the game, their was some rough stuff. Tom Wilson had taken exception to Pierre Crinon’s physical play on superstar Nathan MacKinnon. Wilson and Crinon had come together, and eventually dropped the mitts. It was an unexpected sight at the Olympic stage. It wasn’t until after the contest that we learned that both players would not face further discipline. There had been some rumours circulating that it might lead to an automatic one-game suspension, but that wasn’t the case.

That is big for Canada. Not only does Wilson play on one of their best lines, along with Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini, but he also provides the proverbial physical punch to the Canadian lineup. In addition, these guys are all over the tournament scoring leaders. In the top seven for tournament scorers, McDavid leads with nine, then Celebrini is tied with Sidney Crosby and Juraj Slafkovsky in second with six points, followed by Auston Matthews, Martin Necas, and MacKinnon tied with five points. Wilson has three points, but does miss out on the top power play time.

Canada’s Playoff Lineup

This leads to another bit of an update. With Wilson’s availability confirmed, it would mean that Brad Marchand wouldn’t be guaranteed a spot in the lineup for Wednesday. However, on Sunday, head coach Jon Cooper did clear that up. Even though Marchand had sat the last two contests, he will draw in on Wednesday. Seth Jarvis had been his replacement, and did play well against Switzerland. So, it is not certain at this time who Cooper sits to allow Marchand to play.

In terms of limited ice time, each of Sam Bennett, Bo Horvat, as well as each of Marchand and Jarvis have been around 10 minutes played a game. We think Horvat has played well, out of the players in that group. So, it comes down to one Bennett and Jarvis, in our estimation. Bennett might have the edge, as he is a better more situational in his deployment. However, given Jarvis’ skillset and skating, he is a solid option, as well.

There will be no further discipline for Tom Wilson or Pierre Crinon

Crinon clear for qualifying round

Wilson clear for quarterfinal https://t.co/N3Jqx0GGUy

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) February 15, 2026

Oh Yeah, the Goalie Controversary

The other point of conversation, is Canada’s goaltending decision. Cooper will likely stay mum on this front until nearer puck drop, and maybe it depends slightly on the matchup. Jordan Binnington might be a better choice if there’s more action, like against Czechia. However, if it did end up being Denmark, maybe Logan Thompson is able to be patient, and be ready for action, after being sat cold for a while. Binnington has played well with one shutout, and stopping 38 of 40 shots overall. Likewise, Thompson was fine as well, stopping 24 of 25 in his one game against Switzerland.

Canada and the coach’s work is far from done. Besides the choices on Marchand’s switch and the tenders, the team needs to be ready for Wednesday. The game is a 10:40 a.m. Eastern Standard Time puck drop. So, buckle up Canada, it truly is now or never.

Main Photo Credit: Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images

Welcome to our continued coverage for Canada and the rest of the teams at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
