General manager <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a><\/strong> inked <a href=\"https:\/\/cfjctoday.com\/2019\/05\/26\/swedish-forward-joakim-nygard-signs-with-edmonton-oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highly coveted Swedish free agent <strong>Joakim Nyg\u00e5rd<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 26-year-old signed a one-year entry-level deal worth a maximum of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$925,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This signing appears to address some needs up front, as the Oilers are in desperate need of some speed in their top-nine.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this appears to be a low-risk deal, and could potentially turn out better than the<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riedeto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tobias Rieder<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/07\/01\/sign-tobias-rieder\/\" target=\"_self\">signing<\/a> a summer ago. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from that, we can expect Holland to continue to retool his roster.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a closer look at the Oilers needs and off-season priorities this summer. Then we look at some potential Oilers free agent signings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Team Needs <\/b><\/h1>\n<h2><b>Secondary Scorers Upfront\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most obvious needs is secondary scoring. Despite having <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a><\/strong> on their roster, Edmonton <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhl.com\/stats\/team?reportType=season&amp;seasonFrom=20182019&amp;seasonTo=20182019&amp;gameType=2&amp;filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&amp;sort=goalsFor\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was ranked 20th<\/a> in \u201cgoals-for\u201d last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of McDavid, Draisaitl and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nugenry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Nugent-Hopkins<\/a><\/strong>, the Oilers had only two other forwards (<\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chiasal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Chiasson<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kassiza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack Kassian<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) who scored more than ten goals last year. The Oilers are very strong down the middle, but as a group, they have one of the weakest collections of wingers in the NHL. This has meant that one of Draisaitl or Nugent-Hopkins has often lined up with McDavid. Getting wingers who can play in the top nine and better utilize the Oilers centre depth to give them three strong lines should be a top priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Add a Puck-Moving Defenceman in the Top Four<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another need is a puck-moving defenceman that can play heavy minutes in the top-two pairings.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oilers have been trying to find one for a while but nothing has come into fruition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although, many people feel that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evan Bouchard<\/a><\/strong> has the potential to become their number one defenceman. It is uncertain if the Oilers want to rush him into that role as early as next season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From what we have seen, the Oilers tried to push <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klefbos01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oscar Klefbom<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larssad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Larsson<\/a><\/strong> in the number one pairing role but it didn&#8217;t yield optimal results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, the Oilers might need to look for improvements through the free-agent market. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a look at a few potential free agent targets that might be on the Oilers wish list.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gustav Nyquist Could Help<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7yVNY_V6i1g\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nyquigu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gustav Nyquist<\/a><\/strong> is a proven scorer in the NHL with four 20-goal-seasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had a decent 2018-19 campaign, finishing with 22 goals and 38 assists for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/search\/San+Jose+Sharks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 29, Nyquist looks like he should have a few more prime years left and would be a solid secondary scoring option for the Oilers.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has also played under Holland for a number of years in Detroit, so perhaps there is some interest there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nyquist made $4,750,000 last year and might ask for a modest raise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the Oilers <a href=\"https:\/\/puckpedia.com\/team\/edmonton-oilers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tight budget<\/a>, they might have to do some work fit him into the roster. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might be a decent signing if they are able to get him in the \u00a0$4,800,000 to $5,100,000 range.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would be a fair price to pay to sign a proven 20-goal and 50+ point player in their lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Brett Connolly an Affordable Signing?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/connobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brett Connolly<\/strong><\/a> might be another free agent target the Oilers want to sign this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He is coming off a career season with 22 goals and 24 assists for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> last year. Connolly\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has the size, skill and hockey IQ to play up and down the lineup. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes him a versatile player for the Oilers to have in their top-six or top-nine. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 27-years-old Connolly might be just entering his prime. He is coming off a two-year deal that saw him make $1.5 million last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financially, he should be an affordable option for an Edmonton team looking to add secondary scoring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realistically, Connolly might be an ideal free agent target for the Oilers if they are able to get him around the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0$2.6 million to $3.3 million range.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Top-Four Defenceman<\/b><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Swing Big for Tyler Myers?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/myersty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Myers<\/a><\/strong> may not be your typical number one defenseman but signing him would significantly improve the Oilers blue-line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myers is a big (6-foot-8, 229 pound) minute-eating defenseman who has some offensive skills as well. He averaged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/myersty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a021 minutes a night along with 34 points<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> in the past two seasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is also a solid power-play option and is a decent free-agent target for an Oilers team looking to improve their defensive depth on the right side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, Myers should have plenty of suitors and at 29 he is likely looking for a long term deal.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/karlser01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erik Karlsson<\/a><\/strong>, Myers might be the biggest fish on the market so any team that gets him will likely have to pay up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made $5.5 million last year and seeing how the market isn\u2019t saturated with right-shot defenders, there may be a huge bidding war for his services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Oilers were all-in on signing him, they might be able to make things happen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roster wise they would have to make room and possibly move a few players which might include <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sekeran01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrej Sekera<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/russekr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kris Russell<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mannibr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Manning<\/a><\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bennima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Benning<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jake Gardiner a Potential Signing on Defence?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z-vLZHv3eR0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/02\/09\/toronto-maple-leafs-cap-concerns-are-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs\u2019 salary cap situation<\/a>, it doesn&#8217;t look like they will have enough room to re-sign <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gardija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Gardiner<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardiner is due for a pay raise and might be a solid free agent target for the Oilers to go after.
