General manager David <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was able to make a huge upgrade after dealing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/subbapk01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>P.K. Subban<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in June 2016. The talented <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> joined draft picks<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/josiro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roman Josi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ellisry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Ellis<\/a><\/strong> and,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekholma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mattias Ekholm<\/a><\/strong> to form of one the dangerous blueline groups in the NHL.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nashville immediately reaped the benefits of the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> addition by winning the Western Conference and reaching its first Stanley Cup Final. The Predators fell in six games to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins,<\/a> but it seemed the foundation was set sustained excellence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the Predators lost in seven games to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> in the conference semifinal in 2018. Nashville took another step backward after the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Dallas Stars<\/a> beat them in six games. One thing that was a common thread in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> this was the lack of offence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has come out and stated that he\u2019s willing to make moves to bolster scoring and would be willing to trade <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to make that happen. One of the \u201cBig Four\u201d could be on the move.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nashville Predators <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Defence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Faces Decision<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nashville\u2019s general manager has always been willing to make an unexpected move. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> rocked the hockey world by dealing beloved captain <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/webersh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shea Weber<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Weber was great defensively and had a great shot on the power play.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, Weber couldn\u2019t keep up with the San Jose Sharks in Game 7 of the 2016 Western Conference semifinal. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> had to change the makeup of his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and took a swing with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Things have worked out well the first couple of seasons with Nashville making the Final and then winning the President\u2019s Trophy in 2017-18. However, the Jets derailed the Predators chance at winning a crown. Dallas used its dynamic young <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to beat Nashville, which <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2018\/11\/16\/nashville-predators-special-teams-not-playing-special\/\" target=\"_self\">had a lethargic power play<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Predators power-play went 0-for-15 in that series and summed up how dreadful it was for the entire season. Nashville struggled with the extra man despite having talented playmakers like Josi and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/05\/20\/nhl-rumours-toronto-nashville-san-jose-colorado\/\" target=\"_self\"> might have to make a same big swing<\/a> just like he did in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Who to Move<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> holds the big contract at $9 million a year until the end of the 2021-22 season. The Toronto native is still one of the best players in the league, but his contract is a huge number on Nashville\u2019s cap.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ellis carries a nice-sized cap hit of $6.25 million until the 2026-27 season and could also be on the move. He is still a great <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defenceman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as well, but that\u2019s also a hefty cap number. The Hamilton, Ontario native does have a tradeable contract and teams like the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple\u00a0 Leafs<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> desire a top-four <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defenceman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> these teams have young players with offensive potential.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ekholm has a very friendly cap number at $3.75 million a season until the end of the 2021-22 season. He would have a moveable contract because of that friendly hit.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Josi is due for a raise from his $4 million deal that runs out at the end of next season. He\u2019s the team captain and has been a bargain for Nashville.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would have to do a lot of work to get a taker for Subban, so Ellis and Ekholm would probably be the players that would be moved. However, the Predators longtime general manager has made the impossible happen. A blockbuster involving <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subban<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> can still happen if a team is willing to part with a key forward.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New Blood on Defence<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One reason Nashville might be willing to part with one of their better blueliners is the potential of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fabbrda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dante Fabbro<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The former Boston University blueliner made his debut late in the season and head coach <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laviope01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Laviolette<\/a><\/strong> put him on the playoff roster.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The British Columbia native is a smooth skater and has shown ability on both ends of the ice. He was a solid player in college and there\u2019s hope that can translate in the pros.
