The Nashville Predators <\/a><\/span>defence<\/span> has been one of the best units in the league over the last three seasons. General manager David <\/span>Poile<\/span> was able to make a huge upgrade after dealing for P.K. Subban<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in June 2016. The talented <\/span>Subban<\/span> joined draft picks Roman Josi<\/a>, Ryan Ellis<\/a><\/strong> and,\u00a0Mattias Ekholm<\/a><\/strong> to form of one the dangerous blueline groups in the NHL.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nashville immediately reaped the benefits of the <\/span>Subban<\/span> addition by winning the Western Conference and reaching its first Stanley Cup Final. The Predators fell in six games to the Pittsburgh Penguins,<\/a> but it seemed the foundation was set sustained excellence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the Predators lost in seven games to the Winnipeg Jets<\/a> in the conference semifinal in 2018. Nashville took another step backward after the Dallas Stars<\/a> beat them in six games. One thing that was a common thread in <\/span>all of<\/span> this was the lack of offence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Poile<\/span> has come out and stated that he\u2019s willing to make moves to bolster scoring and would be willing to trade <\/span>defence<\/span> to make that happen. One of the \u201cBig Four\u201d could be on the move.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nashville Predators <\/span>Defence<\/span> Faces Decision<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

Nashville\u2019s general manager has always been willing to make an unexpected move. <\/span>Poile<\/span> rocked the hockey world by dealing beloved captain Shea Weber<\/a><\/strong> to the Montreal Canadiens<\/a> for <\/span>Subban<\/span>. Weber was great defensively and had a great shot on the power play.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Weber couldn\u2019t keep up with the San Jose Sharks in Game 7 of the 2016 Western Conference semifinal. <\/span>Poile<\/span> had to change the makeup of his <\/span>defence<\/span> and took a swing with\u00a0<\/span>Subban<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Things have worked out well the first couple of seasons with Nashville making the Final and then winning the President\u2019s Trophy in 2017-18. However, the Jets derailed the Predators chance at winning a crown. Dallas used its dynamic young <\/span>defence<\/span> to beat Nashville, which had a lethargic power play<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Predators power-play went 0-for-15 in that series and summed up how dreadful it was for the entire season. Nashville struggled with the extra man despite having talented playmakers like Josi and <\/span>Subban<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Poile<\/span> might have to make a same big swing<\/a> just like he did in 2016.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who to Move<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Subban<\/span> holds the big contract at $9 million a year until the end of the 2021-22 season. The Toronto native is still one of the best players in the league, but his contract is a huge number on Nashville\u2019s cap.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis carries a nice-sized cap hit of $6.25 million until the 2026-27 season and could also be on the move. He is still a great <\/span>defenceman<\/span> as well, but that\u2019s also a hefty cap number. The Hamilton, Ontario native does have a tradeable contract and teams like the Toronto Maple\u00a0 Leafs<\/a><\/span>, Buffalo Sabres\u00a0<\/a><\/span>and Detroit Red Wings<\/a> desire a top-four <\/span>defenceman<\/span>. <\/span>All of<\/span> these teams have young players with offensive potential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ekholm has a very friendly cap number at $3.75 million a season until the end of the 2021-22 season. He would have a moveable contract because of that friendly hit.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Josi is due for a raise from his $4 million deal that runs out at the end of next season. He\u2019s the team captain and has been a bargain for Nashville.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Poile<\/span> would have to do a lot of work to get a taker for Subban, so Ellis and Ekholm would probably be the players that would be moved. However, the Predators longtime general manager has made the impossible happen. A blockbuster involving <\/span>Subban<\/span> can still happen if a team is willing to part with a key forward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New Blood on Defence<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One reason Nashville might be willing to part with one of their better blueliners is the potential of Dante Fabbro<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. The former Boston University blueliner made his debut late in the season and head coach Peter Laviolette<\/a><\/strong> put him on the playoff roster.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The British Columbia native is a smooth skater and has shown ability on both ends of the ice. He was a solid player in college and there\u2019s hope that can translate in the pros. His growth means the Predators might test the waters on a trade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Last Word<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Predators\u2019 window for winning a title is closing, but <\/span>Poile<\/span> can extend it by making the right moves. It\u2019s not just <\/span>defence<\/span> that could be on the go as Kyle Turris<\/a>, Mikael Granlund<\/a>, Craig Smith,\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>and Nick Bonino<\/a><\/strong> could be on the block.<\/span> The Predators might be in the market to get free agent Matt Duchene<\/a><\/strong>.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Nashville\u2019s <\/span>defence<\/span> has been a strength the last few seasons, but it could look a lot different at the start of the 2019-20 season.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
