Neither play can be sent to the American Hockey League without having to be put through waivers again. As a result, it is likely both will be on the team’s Opening Night roster.

Blais’s Story

Blais is on a $775,000 contract that he signed with the Habs over the summer.

Going to a new team carries some good news for Blais, who reunites with head coach Craig Berube in Toronto. Blais played for Berube with the St. Louis Blues from 2019 until his trade in the summer of 2021. In the Blues’ run to the Stanley Cup in 2019, Blais played in 15 playoff games.

Blais is a strong addition to Berube’s playstyle. Blais plays with grit and is not afraid to use his body to make a play. While some may have thought the forward spot should have gone to Easton Cowan, adding Blais is not a bad move. In fact, it could end up being a sneaky good move for the team.

Primeau’s Story

Primeau has served as a backup goalie in his career. He also carries a $775,000 contract with him to Toronto.

With Justin Wolf absent due to a family matter, it makes sense for the Leafs to add another goalie with Opening Night approaching. The Leafs also added veteran goalie James Reimer. However, Primeau’s arrival likely means Reimer is not making the team.

Anthony Stolarz is expected to get the season-opening nod. Primeau will likely serve as the backup.

Revenge Time?

Blais and Primeau were both waived by the Canadiens. In a fitting twist, the Leafs and Habs meet to open the season on Wednesday. Perhaps retribution is in order for not taking a chance on them?

Main Photo: David Kirouac

As rosters are finalized for the 2025-26 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have made two additions to their roster.
