There are a number of big-name players who are eligible to get contract extensions. General managers are working hard to make sure these key players don’t hit the open market. Names like Kirill Kaprizov<\/a> and Jack Eichel<\/a> are some of the big-ticket players. However, the name of Connor McDavid<\/a> is the one that’s on everyone’s lips. The hockey world awaits what he’ll do next.<\/p>\n

This edition of NHL rumours deals with where talks may go between the Edmonton Oilers<\/a> and their captain. These talks could include a surprising twist.<\/p>\n

A Surprising Number Could be in Play Connor McDavid and Edmonton Oilers<\/h3>\n

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman gave an update on where talks may head with McDavid and the Oilers in a recent edition of 32 Thoughts.<\/a> Friedman mentioned that the all-world player could take a lower number than expected.<\/em><\/p>\n

Analysis:<\/em> We haven’t seen much movement when it comes to some of the higher-end players that could hit the free agent market on July 1 if they remain unsigned. There have been some rumblings about talks with Kapizov and the Minnesota Wild<\/a> in other editions of NHL rumours.<\/a> However, we’ve yet to hear an actual dollar amount or term when it comes to McDavid.<\/p>\n

We’ve talked about<\/a> the Canadian superstar in several editions of NHL rumours<\/a>. However, there hasn’t been anything pinned down when it comes to his next contract. We’ve seen speculation on whether he’ll sign a mid-range deal of three or four years. The speculation on dollar amount has also been all over the spectrum, as well.<\/p>\n

Despite all the prognostications about McDavid’s future, the one common factor is that he wants to be a winner. Edmonton has lost in the Stanley Cup Final for two consecutive seasons. The veteran forward wants to finally hoist the vaunted silver chalice.<\/p>\n

What It Means<\/h4>\n

Friedman’s report on McDavid’s next deal could allow general manager Stan Bowman to be more aggressive when it comes to fixing other holes on the roster. Questions regarding the defence and goaltending have only grown louder since losing to the Florida Panthers i<\/a>n the Final again. We could see new faces on the back end of the Oilers lineup should McDavid give the team a hometown discount.<\/p>\n

However, this could be a case of buy now, pay later. A short-term deal with a lower cap hit could mean McDavid wants to secure a massive payday down the line. This might be punting the ball down the road, but Bowman would rather find a way to keep McDavid happy. Losing the best player in the world for nothing would be a disaster.<\/p>\n

Edmonton is already paying Leon Draisaitl<\/a> a cool $14 million starting this season.<\/a> Could we possibly see something similar, but we with a shorter term for McDavid? We won’t know what course these talks will take until a deal is signed. However, it seems that McDavid’s focus is winning a championship and everything else comes second.<\/p>\n
