The contract is for two seasons. The cap hit is unknown as of right now.

Colangelo’s previous contract—a two-year deal with a $925,000 cap hit—expired after the 2024–25 season. He was originally drafted by the Ducks in the second round (36th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Last season, Colangelo split time between Anaheim and AHL affiliate San Diego. With the Ducks, he appeared in 32 games and tallied 10 goals and 2 assists, good for 12 points. Meanwhile, in the AHL, he dominated with 40 points in 40 games (22G, 18A), showcasing the scoring potential that has long intrigued Anaheim’s front office.

A Closer Look at Sam Colangelo’s Game

Colangelo’s offensive numbers were driven largely by his goal-scoring touch—particularly on the power play, where he recorded four goals. However, his impact elsewhere on the ice was more limited. According to HockeyStatCards and Natural Stat Trick, he posted a neutral offensive rating (0.0) but a significantly negative defensive rating (-2.8). His expected goals against (xGA) and actual goals against per 60 were among the lowest on the team, suggesting clear development areas.

Still, the 6’2″, 212-pound winger showed flashes of scoring efficiency, recording 1.52 points per 60 minutes at even strength. His continued waiver exemption allows Anaheim to remain flexible with his deployment heading into 2025–26.

What It Means for Anaheim

This signing keeps a young, cost-controlled winger in the system as the Ducks continue their rebuild. Colangelo profiles as a depth scoring option with upside if his defensive metrics improve. While he may start next season with San Diego, his strong AHL track record and NHL finishing touch give him a path back to the big club. His re-signing also shores up Anaheim’s right-wing depth behind Troy Terry and Frank Vatrano.

Main Photo: Gary A.
