Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/delveal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Delvecchio<\/a> died peacefully on July 1, 2025, at the age of 93. Surrounded by family, the longtime <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> great leaves behind an enduring legacy that stretches far beyond the rink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delvecchio\u2019s name is etched deep into the history of the National Hockey League and especially the Red Wings. Where he spent his entire 24-season playing career. A fixture in Detroit from 1950 to 1973. While the world knew him as an incredible hockey player with numerous accomplishments on the ice, we knew him as someone whose humility, strength, competitiveness, kindness, and heart were even greater than his professional achievements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Delvecchio Life and Career<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delvecchio played 1,549 regular season games all with the Red Wings. Ranking him second in franchise history only behind his linemate and close friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a>. Known as one of the smoothest skaters and most reliable centres of his era. He recorded 456 goals and 825 assists for 1,281 points. He also helped lead the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup championships (1952, 1954, and 1955).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His accomplishments earned him numerous honours. Including the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. An award he won three times (1959, 1966, 1969). In 1977, Delvecchio was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and his No. 10 jersey hangs in the rafters of Little Caesars Arena. A permanent reminder of his contributions to the game and the city of Detroit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond his playing days, Delvecchio remained a loyal Red Wing. Serving as head coach and general manager. His lifelong connection to the team helped bridge generations of fans and players, reinforcing the values of loyalty, leadership, and respect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay). Delvecchio was a proud Canadian whose quiet confidence and team-first mentality made him a role model across the country. He is survived by his wife, family, and generations of players and fans who continue to be inspired by his legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the hockey world has lost a legend.
