While some fans were expecting a long term deal with a high AAV, it seems that their general manager, Daniel Briere‘s opting for a bridge contract for the rebuild’s latter half. With two 20-plus goal seasons under his belt at 23 years old, this extension could possibly appear as a steal for the Flyers as Foerster continues to improve.

Philadelphia Flyers Ink Tyson Foerster Extension

In just his second full NHL season, Foerster logged 25 goals with a total of 43 points in 81 games. As one of the Flyers few wingers capable playing the left side, Tyson’s been known for his bolstering shot coupled with high-end defensive competence. He was a notable part of their former coach, John Tortorella’s favourite line last year, playing alongside Noah Cates and Bobby Brink. Their trio stuck together for most of the season, unlike any other part of the forward group, while occasionally receiving first line minutes.

Additionally, he was second in power play points on one of the league’s worst man advantage units, finishing the year with eight. If their coaching staff can find a way to better utilize his shot on power plays, his goal total could reach new heights once again. Overall, Foerster’s made it clear that he needs to be a part of the Flyers’ offence on all fronts.

Top 6 Potential

As Foerster’s already proven he’s capable of consistently posting 20-plus goals per season, he has a high chance of an upcoming breakout season as the Flyers continue to improve. It’s became evident that his skill level’s progressively increasing, especially after his performance at the recent IIHF World Championships. If there’s anyone who’s deserving of higher ice time and better linemates, Tyson’s made a great case for himself.

One of the Flyers’ biggest goals for this offseason should be finding a relatively young talented top 6 centre. Placing Foerster alongside either whoever they may acquire or Sean Couturier could contribute to an outburst of offensive production next year. For example, if the Flyers traded for Marco Rossi and put him on a line with Foerster and Michkov, they’d likely be their highest scoring line without relying on Travis Konecny. However they decide to utilize him next year, his role in the lineup should be of higher importance next year.

Main photo by: Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

After another promising season from Tyson Foerster, the Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly signed him to a two-year extension with a $3.75 million average cap hit.
