The first began in April 2024 after the team officially moved out of Arizona, right before the draft lottery. General manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/armstbi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Armstrong<\/a> has been in his current role with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/07\/11\/nhl-sweaters-best-and-worst-of-the-arizona-coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Arizona<\/a>\/Utah since 2020 and he will certainly be busy again. Utah has important events in the coming months, including the draft lottery, draft, and free agency. After a terrific season that saw them just miss the playoffs, Armstrong will look to address expiring contracts and perhaps add to Utah\u2019s roster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Utah Hockey Club Off-Season Preview<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Lottery and NHL Draft\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first two upcoming dates for Utah are the lottery and NHL Draft. The lottery will occur on May 5, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2025\/04\/09\/nhl-predictions-april-9-san-jose-sharks-vs-minnesota-wild\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Jose Sharks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having a 25.5% chance to win the first pick, the best odds of any team. As for Utah, they cannot win the first overall selection. The team is currently projected to pick 14th, and the most they can move is 10 spots. While they have a <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/nhl-announces-2025-draft-lottery-will-be-may-5\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1.5%<\/a> chance of doing so, there is also the possibility of Utah dropping below 14th. In this case, all they can do is hope for some luck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2025 NHL Entry Draft will take place on June 27 and June 28 in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2025\/05\/02\/history-repeats-itself-the-edmonton-oilers-defeat-the-los-angeles-kings-for-the-fourth-year-in-a-row\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles<\/a>. Utah has one draft pick in every round, except round seven. Their own seventh-round pick was dealt to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2025\/05\/01\/playoff-series-review-florida-panthers-tampa-bay\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in March 2024. The trade sent that pick and defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dumbama01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Dumba<\/a> to the Lightning for their 2027 5th round pick. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he move relieved the entirety of Dumba&#8217;s $3.9 million cap hit from Utah&#8217;s books. The team was still in Arizona at the time of the trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The highest pick in Utah history so far was their first-ever selection in last year\u2019s draft. Utah chose <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/05\/08\/tij-iginla-scouting-report-2024-nhl-draft-12\/\" target=\"_self\">Tij Iginla<\/a> with the 6th overall pick, he signed his entry-level contract shortly after. The son of Hall of Fame forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/iginlja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarome Iginla<\/a> saw his season with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) end early due to a hip injury. He played just 21 games. Utah surely hopes they will get another high pick again this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Expiring Contracts and Free Agency\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah does not have much business to do in terms of re-signing pending free agents. Among their unrestricted free agents are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bjugsni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Bjugstad<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carcomi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Carcone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/borturo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Bortuzzo<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/desimni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick DeSimone<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcbaija03.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack McBain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yamamka01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kailer Yamamoto<\/a> are Utah\u2019s restricted free agents. However, it is known that Carcone has already made his choice in the matter. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sports\/utah-hockey-club\/2025\/04\/22\/where-will-utah-hockey-clubs-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belle Fraser<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salt Lake Tribune <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported that the forward will seek a new team once free agency opens on July 1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a chance that the 36-year-old Bortuzzo played his final NHL season, as the Stanley Cup winner could retire. He only appeared in 17 games with Utah this year due to injury. Utah will now turn its attention to the others, especially Bjugstad and McBain. Bjugstad recorded 45 points (22 goals, 23 assists) last season. However, this year has been the opposite, adding just 19 points while playing in a bottom-six role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s Next<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the numbers, the 32-year-old is a big part of the culture Utah has built. He is an important veteran presence and voice in the locker room. They are key pieces of Utah\u2019s forward depth, so agreeing to terms would be beneficial. Yamamoto will undoubtedly try to reclaim a full-time roster spot. He spent most of the season in the minors, playing in just 12 games with the Club. Whether they re-sign with Utah or not is currently unknown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per <a  href=\"https:\/\/puckpedia.com\/team\/utah-hc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Puckpedia<\/a>, Utah will have around $22 million in cap space. That gives them flexibility to be creative in re-signing players or adding new ones from the open market. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armstrong may also look to lock up centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coolelo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Logan Cooley<\/a> to a long-term extension.
