Although they failed to make the playoffs in what was a somewhat up and down inaugural season, this was a year Utah\u2019s management should be happy with. The goal was to be competitive and fight for a playoff spot, which is exactly what Utah did. They finished the regular season seven points behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2025\/04\/25\/pavel-buchnevich-and-cam-fowler-lead-st-louis-blues-to-game-3-win\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> in the Western Conference. This was a 12-point improvement from last year\u2019s team in Arizona, which was certainly above their expectations. The season in Utah became a story of growth, grit, and laying the groundwork for a promising future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah Hockey Club Enjoyed a Season of Growth for Future<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move to Utah came with uncertainty, but also with immense opportunity and challenges. From the outset, the team embraced its underdog status, choosing to prioritize player development. Despite injuries playing a factor in their failure to make the postseason, Utah stayed competitive throughout the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the first Utah captain ever, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellecl01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clayton Keller<\/a> led the way, having a career year with 90 points in 81 games. Despite the pressure to be the voice of the locker room, he did not disappoint. Keller is a premier player in the league thanks to his playmaking and skating. Those abilities helped earn him a spot on Team USA for the upcoming <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.iihf.com\/en\/events\/2025\/wm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2025 IIHF World Championship<\/a> in Stockholm, Sweden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley and Michael Kesselring were selected by <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usahockey?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@USAHockey<\/a> to represent Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Championship! \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8<a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b7k1QiPsOb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/b7k1QiPsOb<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DFr889P73T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/DFr889P73T<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Utah Mammoth (@utahhockeyclub) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/utahhockeyclub\/status\/1915450988196225227?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 24, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coolelo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Logan Cooley<\/a> and defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kessemi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Kesselring<\/a> will also represent Team USA, while goaltender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vejmeka01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karel Vejmelka<\/a> will play for Czechia. Guenther was expected to play, but an undisclosed injury will keep him out of the tournament. Utah insider <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/hockey\/news\/hockey-clubs-dylan-guenther-out-for-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Morgan<\/a> reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vejmelka handled the bulk of the workload between the pipes, providing stability in the net, even behind a defence that was not fully healthy. The 28-year-old goaltender finished the season with 26 wins, the most of his career. Defencemen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/durzise01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Durzi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marinjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Marino<\/a> each returned late in the season, just in time for Utah\u2019s playoff push.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expectations Greater for Next Season<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this past season was more of a transitional period for Utah, expect next season to be much different. The goal for Utah will be to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Young stars Cooley and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/guentdy01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-26_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Guenther<\/a> will need to take the next step in their development and push Utah forward. Both players had career seasons, recording 65 and 63 points, respectively, and each scored at least 25 goals. Cooley finished second on Utah in scoring behind Keller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooley took significant strides in becoming the team&#8217;s number one centre, playing alongside Keller. He displayed the same style of play as his captain. However, Cooley and Guenther\u2019s impact on Utah\u2019s power play really stood out. Guenther recorded 29 points on the power play, while Cooley had 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking Ahead<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this past season may not have included a playoff berth, it laid the foundation for a future contender. With a clear development path and a devoted fanbase, Utah is trending in the right direction. Next season will boil down to what moves Utah chooses to make over the offseason.
