However, Ray Shero carved out of his own place in the hockey world. He served as general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/09\/06\/ray-shero-penguins-gm\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> and the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/01\/17\/aftermath-of-ray-shero-firing\/\" target=\"_self\"> New Jersey Devils.<\/a> The Saint Paul, Minn. native was the architect of the Penguins team that gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleurma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a> their first career Stanley Cups.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in all eight seasons with him at the helm. However, he was fired in the spring of 204. Shero then got the general manager&#8217;s post with the Devils in 2015. He played a hand in drafting talented players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hischni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nico Hischier<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hugheja03,hugheja02&amp;search=Jack+Hughes&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Hughes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brattje01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesper Bratt<\/a>. Shero served as the bridge between Lou Lamoriello and current GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fitzgto01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-09_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Fitzgerald<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also was an assistant general manager with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2025\/04\/02\/ottawa-senators-rumours-looking-ahead-franchise-injury-news\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2025\/03\/27\/nhl-predictions-march-27th-st-louis-blues-vs-nashville-predators\/\" target=\"_self\">Nashville Predators<\/a> before taking the GM job with the Penguins. Shero wasn&#8217;t currently a general manager at the time of his passing. However, he was helping out the Wild.<\/p>\n<h3>What It Means<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cRay Shero\u2019s smile and personality lit up every room he walked into and brightened the day of everyone he met,&#8221; NHL commissioner Gary Bettman <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/longtime-nhl-general-manager-ray-shero-dead-at-62\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in a statement.<\/a> &#8220;Widely respected throughout hockey for his team-building acumen and eye for talent, he was even more beloved for how he treated everyone fortunate enough to have known him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shero left a lasting legacy in the hockey world. His contributions were mostly in the NHL. However, he also was a part of the Team USA setup in 2013-14.
