Holland is expected to make $25 million over the course of his five-year contract with Edmonton.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The paperwork still has to get done. Over those 36 years, Holland has brought four Stanley Cup Championships to the city of Detroit. The Red Wings have failed to make the playoffs for the past three seasons. Prior to that, the Red Wings had a string of 25 straight years making the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>This move comes after <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yzermst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Yzerman<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/04\/19\/steve-yzerman-named-gm-of-detroit-red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was named the general manager<\/a> in Detroit last month. Yzerman had spent the previous eight years with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>. He spent his final season in Tampa as a consultant for the team.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a> Looks to Fix The Edmonton Oilers<\/h2>\n<p>Holland takes over for <strong>Peter Chiarelli<\/strong> who was the general manager of the Oilers beginning in April of 2015 and was fired just prior to the trade deadline. <strong>Keith Gretzky<\/strong> took over as interim general manager and finished the season in the role. Chiarelli made some questionable moves with the Oilers with the worst of the bunch being trading <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hallta02,hallta01&amp;search=Taylor+Hall&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Hall<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New Jersey Devils<\/a>\u00a0for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larssad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Larsson<\/a><\/strong>. He also signed numerous questionable contracts including those for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lucicmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milan Lucic<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/russekr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kris Russell<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/koskimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikko Koskinen<\/a><\/strong>. This has left the Oilers up against the salary cap, with little depth on the team.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest task for Holland is Edmonton is adding wingers to play with their strong centre group of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nugenry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Nugent-Hopkins<\/a><\/strong>. This lack of depth was a major reason the Oilers were unable to reach the playoffs the last two years. Edmonton has only made the playoffs once in the last 11 years. The Oilers currently hold the 10th pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p>Besides getting help for McDavid another big issue for the Oilers has been their goaltending. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/koskimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikko Koskinen<\/a><\/strong> emerged as the starter for Edmonton starting 51 of the 81 games this season, though he showed better results early in the year and faltered down the stretch.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stolaan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Stolarz<\/a><\/strong> is currently the back-up for the Oilers. He is set to become a free agent.
