Bryson. The deal carries an AAV of 900k and will keep Bryson in Buffalo through 2026. Bryson is a London, Ontario native so this deal keeps the defender close to home for another season. He previously signed a one-year deal in free agency last summer to remain in Buffalo

Buffalo Sabres Extend Jacob Bryson

Another year of Brys! ⚔️

We have signed Jacob Bryson to a one-year contract extension with an AAV of $900,000.

Details → https://t.co/WbAtDkAUS2 pic.twitter.com/pdsSUIa3ZS

— Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) March 20, 2025

Bryson, 27, has been in the Sabres organization his entire career. He was a fourth-round draft pick, 99th overall by the Sabres in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He’s played in 243 games across five seasons for Buffalo registering 43 points in those contests. His career high came in the 2021-22 season when he tallied ten points. Bryson isn’t an offensive defenceman by any means but he’s been a solid depth defenceman for Buffalo since his arrival. He is the smallest in stature on Buffalo’s defense corps standing at only 5″9 and 174 lbs.

What it Means for the Buffalo Sabres

Bryson is currently featured on the team’s third pair alongside Connor Clifton. He is one of five left-shot defencemen on the Sabres which makes his re-signing slightly puzzling. Buffalo has a great young defense featuring the likes of Owen Power, Rasmus Dahlin, Mattias Samuelsson, and Bowen Byram. They also acquired Jacob Bernard-Docker in the Dylan Cozens trade. Bernard-Docker is also a right-handed shot which the Sabres lack.

With all the young talent on the Sabres defence, it comes as a bit of a surprise that they’d look to extend Bryson. He likely won’t ever see top-four minutes during his time in Buffalo behind the big four. Still, Bryson can slot in as a solid third-pair defenceman or a seventh defenceman if necessary. At a one-year deal at only 900k, this signing doesn’t have any major implications on the team’s cap or defensive structure.

Main Photo: Timothy T.
