Palmieri inked a two-year contract extension while Boqvist signed a one-year pact. Both players were rumoured to be traded at times last season. Then, he joined the New Jersey Devils, was traded to the Islander. The 34-year-old was in the last year of his four-year, $20 million contract and was set to become a free agent at year’s end. Palmieri’s deal will be for $4.75 million and expire at the end of the 2026-27 season.

Even at his age, he is still an effective player. He registered 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points in 82 games this season. Teams were clamoring over him and Brock Nelson. However, Palmieri wasn’t moved at the trade deadline by then general manager Lou Lamoriello.

Boqvist inked a one-year contract that will see him get $850,000 for the upcoming season. The 24-year-old defenceman split time between the Islanders and the Florida Panthers last season. In New York, he had two goals and eight points in 17 games. Boqvist was set to be a restricted free agent had he not signed his deal.

What Does It Mean

These deals are the first big moves in the Mathieu Darche era. It seems that the new general manager is hitting the ground running and not wasting any time. The Isles will need some work, but it seems that Darche is hoping both players are part of the solution.

Darche may not be done making moves, but this is a good starting point. One wonders what Darche has planned going forward to get the Islanders back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Main Photo Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images

The New York Islanders have made a pair of signings on Friday.
