Hockey Canada has announced their roster for the 2019 IIHF World Championship<\/a>, held in Bratislava and Ko\u0161ice, Slovakia. It includes 22 players, with all having played in the NHL during the past season.<\/p>\n

Team Canada 2019 World Championship Roster<\/h1>\n

Goaltending<\/h2>\n

Canada is opting for an interesting, youthful goalie group of promise and experience. Heralded Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> goalie\u00a0Matt Murray<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>will presumably be taking the starting slot after a strong season, albeit injury-riddled. At 24 years old, he is the oldest goalie on the squad. The other two goaltenders will be the Philadelphia Flyers\u00a0Carter Hart<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and the New Jersey Devils\u00a0MacKenzie Blackwood<\/strong><\/a>, who are both coming off very impressive rookie seasons. They stand at just 20 and 22 years old, respectively.<\/p>\n

Hart and Blackwood both put up strong numbers on non-playoff teams, and should offer above-average depth for Team Canada should injuries in the goal crease occur.<\/p>\n

Forwards<\/h2>\n

A preliminary scroll through the list yields notable superstar power — the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>\u00a0John Tavares<\/strong><\/a>, Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> teammates\u00a0Mark Stone<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jonathan Marchessault<\/strong><\/a>, and Flyers center\u00a0Sean Couturier<\/strong><\/a>, among others. Stone and Marchessault compete with a chip on their shoulder, after being eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the San Jose Sharks in dramatic fashion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The roster includes some youthful depth pieces as well.\u00a0Detroit Red Wings<\/a> forwards\u00a0Tyler Bertuzzi<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Anthony Mantha<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>will join the crew. Young Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> centerpiece\u00a0Dylan Strome<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was also named to the team, creating admirable depth down the middle.<\/p>\n

Defense<\/h2>\n

Ottawa Senators<\/a> young star\u00a0Thomas Chabot<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>spearheads the a strong, young defense, along with the Edmonton Oilers<\/a>\u00a0Darnell Nurse<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and yet another Golden Knights player in\u00a0Shea Theodore<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The puck-moving ability of their D-core should make life easier for their already threatening offense, and add some goals to boot. There is a sort of flair-like, youthful identity formed with this roster. Supplementing it very nicely is their choice of defensemen.<\/p>\n

There’s certainly a lot of depth to go around on this team. Canada flaunts solid goaltending, dynamic defense, and deep offense. They look to once again dominate the tournament after crafting such a strong lineup.<\/p>\n
