He had four 30+ goal seasons with Montreal before being traded to Vegas for Nick Suzuki. Suzuki quickly became a leader with the Canadiens and became their captain in 2022. He is currently the team’s number-one center. He has been the piece to build around for the new-era Canadiens.

P.K. Subban is one of the most electrifying players to wear a Habs jersey. A fan favorite in Montreal, his personality shone on and off the ice. As for Souray, he spent six seasons in Montreal, including a season of 26 goals and 64 points. His booming slapshot was a practical part of the Habs powerplay in the early 2000s. Finally, Jose Theodore was the Canadiens goalie who led them into the quarter century. This is not to say they should have made it over the current selections, but they all have a case. Jeff Petry spent eight years with the Canadiens and was part of the team’s cup run in 2021. Petry recorded over 40 points in four consecutive seasons with Montreal. This includes 42 in only 55 games in 2021-22; however, when Shea Weber and P.K Subban are on the team, it’s hard for Petry to beat out those two.

Brian Gionta is the only Habs captain of the last quarter century not to make this list. Koivu, Pacioretty, and Suzuki all were chosen over him. Gionta had a couple of solid seasons with the Canadiens, including a couple of cup runs. He doesn’t have the offensive numbers that other guys who made the list did. The final noteworthy omission is Cole Caufield. Caufield has had 20 or more goals in his first four seasons in Montreal. His linemate Suzuki is on the list but has been in Montreal a little longer than Caufield. Caufield’s omission is due to his short time in Montreal, but he indeed finds himself on this list if there is another list in 25 years.

Main photo by: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images

The NHL has been unveiling each NHL team’s Quarter Century Teams over the last few weeks.
