This comes as especially tough news to the Canes, as the other starting goaltender, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderfr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederik Andersen<\/a>, is expected to be out for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/11\/23\/carolina-hurricanes-goalies-andersen-injuries-update-tulsky\/\" target=\"_self\">an estimated eight to 12 weeks<\/a> after undergoing surgery Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pyotr Kochetkov Injury Hurts Canes<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midway through overtime, Blue Jackets defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/werenza01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Werenski<\/a> and Canes defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkese01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Walker<\/a> approached the net. Eyes locked on the puck, Kochetkov came to the back right corner of the crease to poke check the puck out of the Blue Jackets\u2019 possession. However, the angle and speed of the tangled blueliners were not favourable for the 25-year-old goaltender. He was able to stand and skate with his own power, but the severity of the injury and what all was injured is currently unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Rod Brind&#8217;Amour did not have an update on Pyotr Kochetkov post-game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We already have one goalie down. This is not ideal, that&#8217;s for sure. I don&#8217;t know where we are at [with Kochetkov&#8217;s injury]. It didn&#8217;t look great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Canes?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Canes<\/a> are scheduled to be off on Sunday. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XxdOACcFS4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/XxdOACcFS4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Walt Ruff (@WaltRuff) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaltRuff\/status\/1860522571961139437?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">November 24, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>The Next Man Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the injury, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/martisp01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Martin<\/a> stepped into the crease in relief of Kochetkov. With two minutes and some change left in overtime, Martin made a save on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sillico01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cole Sillinger<\/a> wrister. The game ultimately went to a shootout. Martin allowed one goal from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/monahse01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Monahan<\/a>, whereas the next two players missed the net entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin is the next man up for the red frame, fulfilling his role as the backup goaltender. With the information we have now, this is not expected to change. However, whenever a goaltender takes to the crease, a backup is crucial. The question is, <em>&#8220;Who will serve in that role for Martin?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Carolina\u2019s Next Steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This setback will be a real test for first-year general manager Eric Tulsky. The next game will be Monday at home against the visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/11\/16\/dallas-stars-offence-surges-after-recent-missed-opportunities\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars<\/a>. Even if all tests go well for Kochetkov, it is still highly unlikely for him to enter the crease. All fingers point to Martin being the Carolina goalie to start. In a <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/hurricanes\/news\/what-s-the-plan-tulsky-talks-canes-crease-without-andersen\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent interview<\/a>, Tulsky mentioned feeling comfortable with calling up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/peretya01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yaniv Perets<\/a> if need be. However, with three games played on the season, Perets currently sits at the bottom of the Chicago Wolves\u2019 goalie stats with a save percentage of .825% and a goals-against average of 3.67. Tulsky did mention another Wolves\u2019 goalie to consider, which is the man at the top of the stats ranking &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tokardu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dustin Tokarski<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ticking Away<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokarski has experience across five different NHL teams since the 2009-10 season. The 35-year-old Saskatchewan native has played 80 games in the NHL and recorded two shutouts. In his NHL career, he boasts a save percentage of .902% and a GAA of 3.15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signing a professional tryout contract with the Wolves on November 2, he has played three games. Two of those games being back-to-back shutout wins. This season, he has earned a save percentage of .963% and a GAA of 1.01.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokarski s no stranger to helping Carolina to some extent, either. In 2019, he played for the Carolina Hurricanes\u2019 then AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. In the quick goalie swap between the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/11\/23\/nhl-rumours-potential-new-york-rangers-forward-targets\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a>\u2019 AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack, and the Charlotte Checkers, his veteran presence helped the Checkers win the Calder Cup, which was the second of his AHL career.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What The Pyotr Kochetkov Injury Means<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hurricane goalie situation is far from ideal. However, there are options for the team to consider. Whether it is signing a new goalie, a callup, or a trade, management is going to be pretty busy. However, the Canes have dealt with this sort of thing before. Just last season backups had to take the reins for nearly a month due to Andersen and Kochetkov&#8217;s coinciding absences.
