The NHL Player&#8217;s Association (NHLPA) executive director Marty Walsh announced the formation of a Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, better known as CTE, Advisory Committee. The NHL and NFL have been frequently been engaged in discussions around the topic of CTE due to the known dangers of head injuries. Furthermore, t<\/span><\/span>he news of the NHLPA forming a committee comes just days after a the NFL had their own admission.\u00a0 Now with the NHL acknowledging it too, this appears to be a historic few days in the effort to better protect players.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 data-attrid=\"wa:\/description\" data-hveid=\"CB4QAA\">Committee Forms Months After Posthumous Diagnosis<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wDYxhc\" lang=\"en-US\" data-md=\"78\">\n<div class=\"setTDc\">\n<div lang=\"en\" data-hveid=\"CBwQAA\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwjuh7Kdr7yJAxV2jIkEHYwIIpEQFSgAegQIHBAA\">\n<div class=\"tF2Cxc\">\n<div class=\"yuRUbf\">Over the summer, former NHL player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsgr02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Johnson<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/07\/10\/former-nhl-player-posthumously-diagnosed-with-cte\/\" target=\"_self\">posthumously diagnosed with CTE<\/a>. Johnson committed suicide by gunshot in 2019. Johnson&#8217;s family took the announcement as an opportunity to encourage change in the sports world.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cI had no idea what CTE even stood for when my dad took his life,\u201d Carson, Johnson\u2019s daughter, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/concussionfoundation.org\/news\/press-release\/nhl-veteran-former-nashville-predators-captain-greg-johnson-diagnosed-with-cte\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement released by the Concussion Legacy Foundation<\/a>. \u201cNow understanding that the hits he endured throughout his hockey career damaged his brain, I want all athletes to understand the risks. I want the NHL to start acknowledging it exists and do more to protect its players so other daughters don\u2019t have to lose their fathers.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Former NHL Players Have Been Affected by Head Injuries<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shawan01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Shaw<\/a>, a former Stanley Cup champion, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/04\/26\/andrew-shaw-retires-concussion-issues\/\" target=\"_self\">retired in 2021<\/a> due to concussions. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a> missed many games due to his own concussion issues. Hockey is a physical game. However, while some may be able to overcome them, there former players like Johnson who can not.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, former forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carcida01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-01_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Carcillo<\/a> has been vocal about his own concussion issues. Earlier this year, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/19\/sport\/psilocybin-athletes-life-changing-injuries-psychedelics-spt-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carcillo talked about not even being able to go outside<\/a> without sunglasses due to the brightness hurting his head as a result of his head injuries.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf they (his kids) want to go outside on a very sunny day, and I can\u2019t find my dark glasses to block the sun out \u2026 I would try to go outside and tough it \u2026 that would trigger a headache, and that would trigger head pressure,\u201d Carcillo said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Is Change on the Horizon?<\/h3>\n<p>We can only hope this announcement is the first domino that falls in making the sport safer. Yes, hockey is physical by nature. Physicality leads to hits and head injuries. However, now that the connection between the sport and CTE is now being acknowledged, perhaps solutions to make players safer can be found.
