{"id":45479,"date":"2019-04-15T21:12:53","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T01:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/?p=45479"},"modified":"2019-04-15T21:19:21","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T01:19:21","slug":"edmonton-oilers-general-manager-potential-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/04\/15\/edmonton-oilers-general-manager-potential-candidates\/","title":{"rendered":"Edmonton Oilers General Manager Potential Candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After missing the playoffs 12 times in the past 13 seasons, one of the first priorities for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> this off-season is to find a new general manager. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u00a0Oilers fired <strong>Peter Chiarelli<\/strong> in late-January and had <strong>Keith Gretzky<\/strong> act\u00a0as the interim GM for the remainder of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Oilers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/sports-pmn\/hockey-sports-pmn\/edmonton-ceo-bob-nicholson-looks-for-new-gm-after-another-lost-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">season-ending news conference<\/a>, CEO <strong>Bob Nicholson<\/strong> said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have to give the fans a plan and we have to make sure the fans understand the plan. It starts right away, as soon as the general manager is in place. We have to make sure we\u2019re getting that out in front of everyone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He went on further to say,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d like to hire the general manager tomorrow, but that\u2019s not going to happen. As I\u2019ve said before, I\u2019m not going to rush the process. We\u2019re going to do a deep dive . . . I\u2019d like to have the person as soon as possible, but I\u2019m not sure how long that\u2019s going to take.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h1>Potential Oilers General Manager Candidates<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, we are not entirely sure who is at the top of the candidate list. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is more speculation than anything, but here are some names who may be considered in the running to become the Edmonton Oilers\u2019 next GM.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Keith Gretzky an Internal GM Candidate<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keith Gretzky is an obvious place to start, he acted as the Oilers\u2019 interim general manager after Peter Chiarelli was let go and received\u00a0good reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gretzky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/oilers\/news\/talking-points-nicholson-and-gretzky-address-the-media\/c-306583434\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated that he is interested<\/a> in running for the position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went on to say that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have the knowledge of being around for three years*. I know what\u2019s in our system. I know what we have coming up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>(*joined the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oilers as an a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ssistant\u00a0GM in 2016)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kFWhk8RV1mA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the interview, Nicholson also stated that he was impressed by Gretzky\u2019s performance in the interim. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in all, this helps Gretzky because the interviewing process should be easier. Considering that they know exactly what they are getting from Gretzky if they decide to name him the new GM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, some may argue that Gretzky may not be the best candidate out there and the Oilers should explore all options thoroughly before pulling the trigger on him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Kelly McCrimmon an External GM Candidate<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Kelly McCrimmon<\/strong> is another name rumored to be a strong gm candidate on the Oilers\u2019 target list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas\u00a0Golden Knights<\/a>\u00a0assistant general manager has played a huge role in helping put a strong team in Vegas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to that, McCrimmon was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/las-vegas-names-kelly-mccrimmon-assistant-gm\/c-281275002\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with the Brandon Wheat Kings<\/a> of the Western Hockey League (since 1988). He<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has served as a majority owner, GM, and coach. He won two WHL championships and multiple division and conference titles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, McCrimmon has proven that he is capable of putting together a winning culture. On top of that, his wealth of experience in developing young players at the junior level is another highlight on his resume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, McCrimmon might be one of the best external candidates to become the Oilers next GM or for any NHL team looking for one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, things might get tricky as the Golden Knights refused to let any teams talk to McCrimmon until their playoff run is over. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on how far they go, the timing might make things tight in Edmonton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, a new GM may mean new coaching staff and scouts as well. This could potentially limit the Oilers time to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0prepare for the draft and free agency this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Bill Guerin Another Candidate<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gueribi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bill Guerin<\/strong><\/a> might be another name on the list of potential GM candidates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guerin has been quietly building his resume over the past several years. He has been working as an assistant general manager for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> for the past five seasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was part of the management staff that successfully helped the Penguins capture back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, Guerin knows what it takes to build championship teams around star players (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sidney Crosby<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>Evgeni Malkin<\/strong><\/a>). Something, Peter Chiarelli wasn\u2019t able to do in Edmonton with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connor McDavid<\/strong> <\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>Leon Draisaitl<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from that, Guerin has also won championships as a player and spent time as a player development coach as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding these things together, potentially makes him a strong candidate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems like Guerin is ready to take the next step forward and become a GM of an NHL team. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Other Oilers General Manager Candidates<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from those three, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/edmonton-oilers\/matheson-keep-it-in-house-and-give-gm-job-to-keith-gretzky\/wcm\/b41c1a58-e857-4a95-b171-e7049d07639a\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other names rumored to be in the mix<\/a> include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/verbepa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pat Verbeek<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Norm Mciver<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fitzgto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tom Fitzgerald<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/huntema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>Mark Hunter<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gillimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Gillis<\/strong><\/a>, and several others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we can see, the Oilers have a long list of candidates but the real question is whether they can find the right man for the job.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Only time will tell if their new GM can turn things around in Edmonton for McDavid and friends.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"nqxDqlcIQqVknyb954UfMQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/984387490\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'nqxDqlcIQqVknyb954UfMQ',sig:'z3c4r2WtqKclYK2ElmmfNDyJAsqA_jG24hUw4LzC-H4=',w:'594px',h:'450px',items:'984387490',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After missing the playoffs 12 times in the past 13 seasons, one of the first priorities for the Edmonton Oilers this off-season is to find a new general manager.
