However, some fans do it anyway. It looked like the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vancouver Canucks<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> were on their way to another big opening-night win. However, they let the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a> get back in the game. After leading 4-1 after one period, they lost 6-5. Sure, it is only the first game out of 82 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it is unacceptable to blow a lead of that margin. But again, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the first game. We are not going to overreact to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wednesday&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> loss <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of course, there are concerns. The opening night loss to the Flames had the Canucks problems exposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Vancouver&#8217;s Loss Exposes Some Team Problems<\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/silovar01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arturs Silovs<\/a> and the Trouble with Long Shots<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/demkoth01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thatcher Demko<\/a> <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/09\/24\/canucks-goaltending-situation-demko\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">out with his popliteus problem<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/silovar01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-11_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arturs Silovs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/09\/21\/kevin-lankinen-signs-new-deal\/\" target=\"_self\">newcomer<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lankike01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Lankinen<\/a> are in charge of the crease. It was Silovs who was in net against the Flames. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Starting the season without their star goaltender was going to be tough. Silovs displayed heroics in last <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">year&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> playoffs, but there were some concerns heading into the season. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Latvian goaltender had trouble stopping shots from distance. It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was seen<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the preseason <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> after game one of the regular season, it is a concern. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As seen on MacKenzie <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Weegar&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> goal that tied the game, Silovs could have done better, especially since there was no screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Goalie&#39;s take on things: Silovs has to challenge out of the crease on those shots from the point. Throughout the season, he will need to work on stopping shots from distance with Canucks goalie coach Marko Torenius.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Defence Looked Sloppy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The loss to Calgary saw the Canucks problems exposed on defence. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After the first period, the Canucks were letting the Flames into the defensive zone with ease. Calgary was taking a lot more chances on Silovs. There was also a ton of giveaways and passes that went nowhere. Sloppiness was all around. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It seemed that the Canucks defence <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">couldn&#8217;t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> keep up after the first period. The first pairing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughequ01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quinn Hughes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hronefi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Filip Hronek<\/a> had good moments. But other than them<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> defence got uglier as the game went on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forbode01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Forbort<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/deshavi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Desharnais<\/a> were both signed in the offseason for their size and physicality. However, there were concerns before the season because of their lack of mobility. That turned out to be the case on Wednesday night. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It would be wrong to pinpoint the defensive lapses on one player <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the defence as a whole was a problem. According to <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalstattrick.com\/game.php?season=20242025&amp;game=20009\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NaturalStatTrick<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Hughes and Hronek were on the ice for a combined 18 shots against the Flames. Forbort and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/myersty01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Myers<\/a> were on the ice for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 7 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vancouver head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tocchri01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Tocchet<\/a> <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wasn&#8217;t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> happy with the defending and the play on the puck but is confident his team will get better in those areas. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t was a loose game<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">we&#8217;ll<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> learn,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/vancouver-canucks\/flames-loss-looked-worse-rick-tocchet\/wcm\/43cb4a46-78aa-478d-b53a-b23da325781a?taid=6708556d499fda0001ac5ffb&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he said after practice on Thursday <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">per<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Patrick Johnston of The Vancouver Sun.<\/span><\/a> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tocchet, being<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">big<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> preacher of defensive structure, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">even<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> admitted he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">could&#8217;ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> done better on opening night. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cA<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> little <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bit\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on me,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he said.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> been preaching transition. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> been preaching all this other stuff. But <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">we\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> still got to do the meat and potatoes without the puck<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Offence Dries up Late<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The offence was flying in the first period. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boesebr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock Boeser<\/a> scored two goals <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/garlaco01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conor Garland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spronda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Sprong<\/a> got on the board. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But after managing 15 shots in the first period, Vancouver only managed 10 for the rest of the game, including none in overtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Canucks took their foot off the gas and it cost them. It cannot happen. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/millejt01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-11_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.T. Miller<\/a> ended up scoring the game-tying goal but the Canucks needed another one of their stars to step up. Unfortunately, Pettersson only managed one assist on the night. He needed to step up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the playoffs against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, the Canucks offence dried up at the worst possible time.
