Since joining the team, Dowd has recorded the best season of his career. In 64 games, he has posted eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points.

Dowds new agreement is a $100,000 raise from his previous league-minimum contract. This deal cements his place as the fourth-line center for the club, a spot he was previously competing with Travis Boyd for.

What This Means for the Future

Dowd has been a solid addition since his arrival on the Capitals bench. He ranked fourth in penalty kill minutes per game among the teams forwards who played at least 60 games. He also ranked first in face-off percentage among players who took at least 100 draws.

The center also boasts the bragging rights of adding the two goals that helped the Capitals clinch their Metropolitan Division title and a subsequent playoff berth. Dowd averaged 10:18 minutes of ice time this season. He is expected to see the same amount of time as the Capitals move through the post-season. The deal is incredibly cap friendly for Washington.

With his extension, Washington is set to bring back all of their current centers for next season. Nicklas Backstrom is looking at the last remaining year on his contract.
