The <em>Blueshirts <\/em>are obviously dominant amongst the geographically closest six teams. The one exception is the seventh <em>Metro<\/em> team down the U.S. East Coast, their rival, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>. Depending on how the other teams look going through the preseason and into this regular season, we may be able to finish at the top of the Metropolitan Division this year again and slam-dunk a playoff spot. Let&#8217;s analyze some of the <em>Met<\/em> performers from last regular season and how they look right now to see what to expect. Standings do not tell the whole story, and we must consider individual team factors that become evident when the Rangers face these individual teams.<\/p>\n<h2>Metropolitan Division Competition Last Season &amp; This Preseason<\/h2>\n<h3>New Jersey Devils Rivalry &amp; Metropolitan Division Competition<\/h3>\n<p>Firstly, the most recent <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/gamecenter\/njd-vs-nyr\/2024\/04\/03\/2023021198\/recap\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">matchup<\/a> between the Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, their fierce rival across the Hudson River, saw a 4-3 win on April 3, 2024. The Devils offence came on strong with a goal from left-winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/palaton01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ondrej Palat<\/a>, then Devils defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithbr05.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Smith<\/a>, and star centreman and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/team\/66\/new-jersey-devils\/captaincy-history\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team captain<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hischni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nico Hischier<\/a>. Hischier was one of three Devils forwards who tied for second place for goals last regular season, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brattje01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesper Bratt<\/a>, Hischier, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hugheja03,hugheja02&amp;search=Jack+Hughes&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Hughes<\/a> all scoring 27 in 2023-24.<\/p>\n<p>Rangers star goaltender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shestig01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Igor Shesterkin<\/a>&#8216;s performance was below average for him in that game, since he allowed three goals on 20 shots against and notched an .850 save percentage. But the Rangers offence came on strong. A goal came from the rising star left-winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lafreal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexis Lafreniere<\/a>, Rangers star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artemi Panarin<\/a>, and wingers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kreidch01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Kreider<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kakkoka01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaapo Kakko<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Shesty&#8217;s earlier performance during their February 22, 2024 <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/gamecenter\/njd-vs-nyr\/2024\/02\/22\/2023020891\/boxscore\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">matchup<\/a> at the Prudential Center was much, much better (5-1 Rangers win). He only allowed one goal off a whopping 40 shots against, notching a remarkable .975 save percentage. Shesty was denied a shutout late in the third period by Jack Hughes off a feed from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/toffoty01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Toffoli<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Takeaway: Shesterkins excellent goaltending plus the Rangers defence can ward off the Devils potent offence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Devils players to watch:\u00a0<\/em><em>Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>New York Islanders Rivalry &amp; Metropolitan Division Competition<\/h3>\n<p>We saw the very recent 6-4 preseason <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/gamecenter\/nyi-vs-nyr\/2024\/09\/24\/2024010023\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">win<\/a> the Rangers pulled off against their <em>Big Apple<\/em> rival, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/09\/18\/2024-25-puck-drop-preview-new-york-islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a>.\u00a0Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shestig01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Igor Shesterkin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quickjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Quick<\/a> allowing two goals each, the\u00a0<em>Blueshirts\u00a0<\/em>offence came alive with goals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesza01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zachary Jones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kreidch01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Kreider<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/edstrad01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Edstrom<\/a>. Plus, of course, since he returned to the ice after a knee-on-knee hit from Isles defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayfisc01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Mayfield<\/a> (whew), the promising young centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chytifi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Filip Chytil<\/a> came back on the ice and scored the first of five unanswered goals in the third period to aid the Rangers comeback.<\/p>\n<p>The Rangers <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/teams\/NYR\/2024_games.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first matchup<\/a> against the Isles last regular season took place outdoors, in front of 79,690 fans at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The game took place on February 18, 2024, and saw a 6-5 overtime win for the Rangers. This is a good matchup to compare goalies, as it was an 11-goal game. Isles star goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sorokil01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ilya Sorokin<\/a> was a <a  href=\"https:\/\/records.nhl.com\/awards\/trophies\/vezina-trophy\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">runner-up<\/a> for the 2022-23 Vezina Trophy for best NHL goaltender.\u00a0Sorokin allowed six goals off 37 shots against for an .865 save percentage, falling well below his <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/islanders\/player\/ilya-sorokin-8478009\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">.909<\/a> season save percentage in 2023-24.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, we saw a goal from centres <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nelsobr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock Nelson<\/a> (34 goals in 82 games last year) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/horvabo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bo Horvat<\/a> (33 goals in 81 games last year), the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/islanders\/stats\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top two<\/a> goal-scorers on the Isles last season.<\/p>\n<p><em>Takeaway: The Islanders are indeed formidable competition both offensively and goaltending-wise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Islanders players to watch: Brock Nelson, Bo Horvat, Matthew Barzal, Ilya Sorokin<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Carolina Hurricanes Rivalry &amp; Metropolitan Division Competition<\/h3>\n<p>The only <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/standings\/2024-04-18\/division\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metropolitan team<\/a> that finished close to the\u00a0<em>Blueshirts\u00a0<\/em>after the 2023-24 regular season was the <a  href=\"https:\/\/puckpedia.com\/team\/carolina-hurricanes\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes.<\/a> The Canes came in second place in the division (52-23-7). Some significant recent news on the Canes end is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/08\/31\/report-carolina-hurricanes-re-sign-emerging-young-winger\/\" target=\"_self\">re-signing<\/a> of 22-year-old centreman and sniper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jarvise01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Jarvis<\/a>.\u00a0<em>Jarvy\u00a0<\/em>broke out last season, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/hurricanes\/player\/seth-jarvis-8482093\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scoring<\/a> 67 points (33 goals and 34 assists) in 81 games. <a  href=\"https:\/\/edge.nhl.com\/en\/skater\/8482093\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarvy&#8217;s<\/a> impressive 18.5 shooting percentage puts him in the league&#8217;s 96th percentile. He will be a free agent in 2032, which seems like ages away right now.<\/p>\n<p>The second-most recent matchup the Rangers had with any of these teams was their Game Six of the 2024 Eastern Second Round against the Canes on <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/gamecenter\/car-vs-nyr\/2024\/05\/16\/2023030226\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 16, 2024<\/a>, a 5-3 win. We saw a hat trick from our left-winger Chris Kreider, scoring three unanswered goals in a row in the third period.<\/p>\n<p>Shesty, in goal the whole game, had a <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/gamecenter\/car-vs-nyr\/2024\/05\/16\/2023030226\/boxscore\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">.917 save percentage<\/a> with three goals allowed on a whopping 36 shot attempts.\u00a0This is a reflection of Carolina&#8217;s strong offence. You had their top three goal-scorers last regular season each scoring a goal in that game: centres <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/necasma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Necas<\/a>, and, guess who? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jarvise01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Jarvis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ahose01,ahose02&amp;search=Sebastian+Aho&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sebastian Aho<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Takeaway: Carolina&#8217;s offence is very strong, and the Blueshirts goaltending and defence should be ready for it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hurricanes players to watch: Seth Jarvis, Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/svechan01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrei Svechnikov<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Washington Capitals<\/h3>\n<p>The Caps finished <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/standings\/2024-04-18\/division\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fourth<\/a> in the Metropolitan Division last year, 23 points behind the\u00a0<em>Blueshirts <\/em>with <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/standings\/2024-04-18\/division\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">91<\/a> (40 wins, 31 losses, and 11 overtime losses). Despite their difference in the standings, Washington was able to dominate New York heavily in their first of four matchups last regular season. On December 9, 2023, the Caps <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/teams\/NYR\/2024_games.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beat the Rangers 4-0<\/a> at Capital One Arena in front of 18,573 fans in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>But two days after Christmas, the matchup returned home in front of a capacity crowd at <em>The Garden<\/em>, and this time the <em>Blueshirts\u00a0<\/em>won 5-1. The <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/boxscores\/202312270NYR.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">victory<\/a> came off, in part, from two goals from young defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/milleka01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K&#8217;Andre Miller<\/a>. There was also a power play goal from the man himself, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artemi Panarin<\/a>. This was already his 19th goal of that season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lafreal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexis Lafreniere<\/a> also scored in the third period to further clench an already-clenched victory.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the Rangers had <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/teams\/NYR\/2024_games.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">back-to-back tight games<\/a> against the Caps. The first was a 3-2 loss to Washington at Capital One Arena, with two Rangers goals from star defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/foxad01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Fox<\/a>. The Caps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dowdni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nic Dowd<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oshietj01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Oshie<\/a> contributed to Washington&#8217;s scoring in that game.\u00a0The very next day (January 14, 2024), the <em>Blueshirts\u00a0<\/em>went home to Manhattan and beat the Caps 2-1 in front of a crowd of 18,006 at The Garden. New York stars Panarin and Lafreniere scored those two goals.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oshietj01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-27_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Oshie<\/a> Injury<\/h4>\n<p>Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oshietj01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Oshie<\/a> scored Washington&#8217;s goal on January 14. Sadly, the 37-year-old right-winger Oshie is <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/t-j-oshie-likely-to-begin-season-on-ltir\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expected<\/a> to start this season on long-term injured reserve due to &#8220;sometimes debilitating&#8221; back pain.<\/p>\n<p><em>Takeaway: The Rangers should keep their guard up even against a team they <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/standings\/2023-04-14\/division\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dominated<\/a> by far in previous seasons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Capitals players to watch: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stromdy01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Strome<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Pittsburgh Penguins<\/h3>\n<p>The last Pens and <em>Blueshirts\u00a0<\/em>matchup, on <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/gamecenter\/nyr-vs-pit\/2024\/04\/01\/2023021182\/recap\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 1, 2024<\/a>, reflected the fierce Metropolitan Division competition New York has. The Pens won 5-2, despite only making 20 shots on goal compared to the Rangers 30. This was a big game for Sid the Kid, since his three points got him his 19th season averaging at least one point a game.
