Although Larsson isn’t an offensive defenseman, he has carved a reputation as a reliable defenceman to slot in the lineup. In his three-year tenure with Seattle, he has twice played a full 82-game season, missing one game last season. In that same stretch, he had 25, 33, and 18-point seasons in that order. This extension with Seattle now makes them Larsson’s longest-tenured team by the time the extension expires, considering he has stayed in Edmonton and New Jersey for five seasons each.

Larsson was part of the infamous 2016 Taylor Hall trade that shook the hockey world at the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline. This comes after Matthew Beniers was extended to a 7-year, $49.99 million deal in late August, solidifying another piece of the core.

What The Adam Larsson Contract Means

As mentioned earlier, this brings back another reliable defenceman that new head coach Dan Bylsma could consistently pencil into the roster. With Beniers signed to a long-term extension and Larsson’s deal now in place, it’s clear that the organization values contending with the current team more than completely retooling the core. DailyFaceoff’s Line Combinations feature ranks Adam Larsson as being on the first defensive pairing with Vince Dunn.

Although it may seem like a bit of an overpay to give a steady defenceman who usually gets more PIMs than actual points a (blank) million-dollar extension, Larsson has a big role on this team. He has consistently put up more points with Seattle than at any other point in his career. Next year could be a step this well, considering that several younger players like Shane Wright and Ryan Winterton want to join the NHL within the next few seasons. This move will most likely ramp up the Kraken’s offensive production and could boost Larsson’s overall numbers.

MAIN PHOTO: Stephen Brashear-Imagn Images

The Kraken have a big announcement to make on this Tuesday.
