Teams have been identified by their iconic colours and patterns. Some of them are classic while others are classically awful. This summer our annual series focuses on the best and the worst sweaters in each team’s history. Today we have the best and the worst Vegas Golden Knights sweaters in team history. (Well.. sort of.)

Vegas Golden Knights Sweaters: The Best and Worst

How We Did It?

We at Last Word on Hockey used a variety of methods to compile this list. Polling came from social media, our writers, and fans. We wanted to get a variety of opinions when we put out our list. This compilation will likely spur debate. However, we wanted to see who had the most memorable sweaters in each team’s history. Let’s put our best foot forward with the best sweaters.

The Vegas Golden Knights Sweaters: A History

The Debut

Vegas played its inaugural game on October 6, 2017 against the Dallas Stars. The uniforms have a white base with other elements like red, Vegas gold, and gun-metal gray on them. The sweaters also have the Knights logo on the front with a helmet in front of a pentagon background.

Making his VGK debut…

⛰ IT’S ADIN HILL ⛰ pic.twitter.com/lZLOiiZkad

— Vegas Golden Knights (@GoldenKnights) October 16, 2022

These road sweaters have stayed the same since the team’s inception. It’s a nice and clean look that has all the colours work well together.

The Grey Home Sweaters

Vegas would play its first home game in franchise history against the Arizona Coyotes on October 10, 2017. The home sweaters would have a gun-metal gray base and black would be part of the team’s design.

That shade of gray hasn’t really been used that often in professional sports. However, the Knights pulled this off and it looks pretty good. However, the Knights would questionably put the gold helmets on the gray sweaters for certain games.

It seemed that Vegas owner Bill Foley wanted to pay homage to his past at the United States Military Academy at West Point with the gold and black. He couldn’t use Black Knights like he originally wanted, but using Golden Knights was a nice compromise.

The Golden Alternate

The team would wear its first alternate jersey starting in 2021. Vegas would finally put the gold into Golden Knights with this new third sweater.

It’s basically a colour swap of the first two sweaters, but it’s a decent look. Vegas would make this the primary home sweater in 2022-23.

This sweater being the primary home one is a nice touch and more befitting of the Golden Knights. However, we do miss the gray ones, too.

2021 Reverse Retro

Las Vegas does have a small history, but making a Reverse Retro may have been a hard proposition. The Golden Knights decided to draw on the history of the IHL’s Las Vegas Thunder.

This sweater is a red one that has two swords crossing behind a pointy star. The elements of black, gold and gray are on the bottom-part of the sweater.

It’s a bit of an odd look with red being the base colour. This sweater would only last one season and there doesn’t seem to be a desire to bring it back.

Glow in the Dark Reverse Retro

Vegas once again paid tribute to the Thunder in their Reverse Retro 2.0 sweaters. However, this one is a step up from the first attempt.

Golden Knights reverse retro jerseys are here.

I’m a fan of the Excalibur font for the Vegas letters, Stardust for the numbers.

Also: there are neon, glow-in-the-dark effects under a black light that I’m sure VGK will incorporate into the intro.
pic.twitter.com/rr8apN8pJi

— Jesse Granger (@JesseGranger_) October 20, 2022

The Golden Knights decided to pay homage to the 1995-96 team. These uniforms had “Vegas” lettering is in the font of the Excalibur hotel, and the numbers are in the font of the Stardust hotel according to NHL Uniform Database.

Vegas also went with glow-in-the-dark numbers and lettering and it just looks cool. We’d love to see this sweater return for special occasions.

2024 Winter Classic

The Golden Knights decided to do a faux-back jersey for the big game against the Seattle Kraken. Fake throwbacks from newer franchises have been done before in sports with the Tampa Bay Rays doing it in MLB.

Vegas basically engineered a vintage sweater for a hockey team if the city had the sport back in the day. One nice touch was the “filigree petal accents on the crest and the numbers are derived from the braid on the dress-gray uniforms worn by cadets at West Point, the alma mater of owner Bill Foley.

These were worn at home along with the Kraken’s Winter Classic sweaters at T-Mobile Arena. It’s a pretty good take at a mock vintage sweater.

Our Picks

One can’t go wrong with the inaugural sweaters for home and away. We also did the glow-in-the-dark jerseys.

The worst one has to be the red Reverse Retro from 2021. Most of the other sweaters are at least pretty good.

Main photo by: Stephen R.
