Just how much is the perennial top-ten point producer worth, and would he take an Edmonton discount. That is, knowing full well that the Edmonton Oilers are a Stanley Cup contender, and that he helped build them to this level. If it allows money to be spent elsewhere, would he do it?

Rumours on Edmonton Oilers Leon Draisaitl Signing an Extension

The source of our rumours come from Sports Illustrated reporting what Draisaitl’s agent, Jiri Poner, said. When discussing the extension itself to be signed

“by the end of August, or it doesn’t work out at all.”

It further went on to add that Draisaitl is likely 30% underpaid on his current contract. Okay perhaps, but since when exactly. That is, if Draisaitl is expecting to be paid retrospectively. Regardless, it gives us an idea of the entire benefit package of riches that Draisaitl is looking for in his next contract. We may recall, at the conclusion of the playoffs, Draisaitl had powerful words for his love of Edmonton at that time. He said that he

“loves being an Oiler more than anything.”

It does appear that Draisaitl wants to stay in Edmonton, so will the Oilers management be able to make it happen?

Notes of Leon Draisaitl’s Scoring Prowess and Fit With Oil

It is obvious when you see Connor McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice together, they are a truly crime-stopping, dynamic duo, and few in the sport have ever done it better. That is, at least partly, what makes watching them so magical. The fact that Draisaitl finished seventh in league scoring in 2023-24, if we go back to the 2018-19 season, McDavid or he have not finished below that since before that season. Furthermore, McDavid and Draisaitl are third-fourth all-time in career playoff points-per-game, at 1.46 and 1.58, respectively. Only Mario Lemieux (1.61) and Wayne Gretzky (1.84) are ahead of the Oilers dynamic duo.

There is so much reason for optimism in Northern Alberta. As close as the Oilers came to the Stanley Cup in 2024, they have already made moves to supplant their status as contenders in 2025. Re-signing Adam Henrique and Connor Brown are great examples of why the Oilers aren’t going anywhere. And over the past season, even something as simply as the arrival of defenceman Evan Bouchard as an elite, NHL defenceman, it just really shows the Oilers as a great team. Therefore, keeping Draisaitl almost seems like second nature in some respects.

Candidate Emerges in Edmonton Oilers GM Hunt

Not that it should matter big picture, but the timing of the Draisaitl extension discussions are notable. Let’s not forget the Edmonton Oilers are currently without a general manager. Ken Holland had made it clear he was not signing an extension before his current one was up. Therefore, the Oilers are currently looking for a general manager. Hopefully the fact that there is no GM in place, does not impact the contract negotiations with Draisaitl. Time will tell, but it does appear as though there is a deadline in place as Poner mentioned.

Main photo credit: Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

The Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl and rumours regarding him re-signing an extension are making waves.
