Today we bring you our Tanner Howe Scouting Report.

Going into the season many had high expectations for Prince Albert, Saskatchewan product Tanner Howe. A player who had been improving year by year in the WHL and many saw him as a top 5-10 pick. However, things didn’t quite turn out as expected for the new captain of the Regina Pats. What many expected to be a dominating season only turned out to be okay. In 68 games he had 77 points, which is 8 points less than the previous season. A decline that together with his smaller frame has seen him drop far on many draft boards. So far so, that he might end up as a potential steal in the second round for teams looking for a strong two-way forward.

Tanner Howe 2024 NHL Draft Scouting Report

Forward — shoots Left
Born November 28th, 2005 — Prince Albert, SK
Height 5’11″ — Weight 181 lbs [180 cm / 82 kg]

Skating

One of the first things you notice when watching Howe play is his motor. He brings a ton of energy to the ice and always keeps his feet moving. Therefore, it is very clear why he was selected as captain of the Pats before the season. He is tenacious and feisty and works harder than most. In terms of his skating, it’s extremely agile and smart, while also being fairly quick. He’s not the fastest skater in the draft but is by no means slow either. It’s decent and with his ability to move into the open off the puck, he is valuable in transition. The skating is also strong enough to make him a solid backchecker, which solidifies his two-way game.

In many ways, his skating can be summed up in a few words. Nothing is outstanding, but everything is good. Both mechanically and in terms of power and speed.

Offensive game

The key to Tanner Howe’s offence comes from his brilliant playmaking. He is a strong passer, who has great hands to help him open up passing lanes along with his aforementioned solid skating mechanics. On top of that, he also has a mentality to play far bigger than his size suggests. He will often be in and around the net or play around the boards to keep the cycle alive. A lot of his goals come from in front of the net which would fall into the category of greasy goals where he simply outworked his direct opposition. Moreover, Howe often works from low to high as a passer to create chances for his teammates.

His shot does need some work as it’s just okay. It has a decent release but it’s nothing special. It has the power behind it but is often off the mark. He is going to be more of a passer than a shooter. He will also do a lot of his work before the puck is on his stick with great and smart off-the-puck movement to get into positions where chances can develop. Once again often from low to high.

Defensive game

Defensively Tanner Howe’s shines bright. He is responsible and dependable in his own zone and is in many ways a coach’s dream player. Well if he was 6-foot-2 and 190lbs. However, he earned the “C” in full, and the leadership he brings is apparent. He works hard and plays a game that’s far bigger than his size suggests. His defensive play can be summarized as powerful, tenacious, and without fear.

He just outworks players along the boards on the backcheck and disrupts a lot of the opponent’s offence before it can even get going. At times he can be a bit too aggressive and it does cost him in the defensive positioning, but with slight changes to the defensive area, he could be a key two-way player, who can play in any situation.

Projection and Comparison

Based on Tanner Howe’s scouting report, we can see that he is in many ways one of those players who is hit with the label of a jack of all trades but master of none. Sometimes this can seem negative but what many misremember is that the full quote has a second part to it which is: “But oftentimes better than a master of one”. For Tanner Howe, this would be the case because as we have seen in the NHL playoffs this season having a strong two-way forward in the middle six can be vital for success.

Take Howe’s stylistic comparison, Zach Hyman of the Edmonton Oilers. Without his tenacious two-way game and ability to contribute in any situation, it’s highly likely the Oilers aren’t playing hockey in June. So a player like Tanner Howe has a ton of value. He will need to improve and prove he isn’t just a byproduct of Connor Bedard, but if he can, he could be a player we talk about as a steal once the class is reevaluated.

Main photo credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome back to Top Shelf Prospects, the column that brings you the next crop of professional hockey players.
