The deal is for one year and the dollar amount is a bit complicated. It carries a $4 million base price tag, but then there are bonuses tacked on. There are bonuses for number of games played, up to $1.75 million for reaching 60. In addition, he gets a cool $500k if the Wings make the post-season, and if he also records 60 points, tack on another $250k. The Buffalo, New York native has played for the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings netted 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 50 games this past 2023-24 season. Kane had a Corsi for of 55.3 and a relative Corsi of 12.2.

The veteran forward has 471 goals and 813 assists for 1,284 points in 1,230 career games. Chicago originally drafted him with the first overall pick of the 2007 NHL Draft. Kane is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and is a Conn Smythe and Hart Trophy winner. He’s one of the best American players to ever lace up a pair of skates in the NHL.

The soon-to-be 36-year-old has won a silver medal with Team USA in the 2010 Olympics and won a bronze at the 2018 IIHF World Championships. He’s also gotten gold at the Under-18 level and a bronze at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships.

What it Means

Kane was still almost a point a game player at this latter stage of his career. He looked like some part of his old self again after a hip ailment slowed him down with the Rangers. Kane missed the early part of the season, but still managed 20 goals with Detroit. It seems being near home, and a possible continued connection with Alex DeBrincat was enticing enough for Kane to stick around. He can still be a contributor for a team needing a veteran scorer. Kane could still be a middle-six scorer for a contending team, which is exactly what the Wings hope to be in 2024-25.

Main photo by: Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

A likely future Hall of Fame forward has a new deal.
