But a big storyline <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0one we are going to focus\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is that the Canucks are underdogs heading into the series against the Oilers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Canucks Are Underdogs, Big\u00a0Underdogs<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you go around the internet and look at the projections for the Vancouver and Edmonton series, many favour Edmonton. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Take a look at the predictions from ESPN staff. All but one of the 24 reporters and analysts picked the Oilers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">including<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferrara01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Ferraro<\/a>, who lives in Vancouver. The only one who\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">picked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the Canucks was Ryan S. Understanding the possible outcomes through this lens, allows you to consider all possibilities ahead of time. They have been one of the hottest teams in the league since\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">November<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> when Kris Knoblauch took over from the fired Jay Woodcroft. Edmonton <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0course, has McDavid and Draisaitl\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as well as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 50-goal scorer from this year in Hyman. The Oilers&#8217; power play torched the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. The likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nugenry01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Nugent-Hopkins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/foegewa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warren Foegele<\/a> provide depth scoring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchev01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evan Bouchard<\/a> has been one of the NHL&#8217;s best defencemen as he\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is paired up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ekholma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mattias Ekholm<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Edmonton has the star power and depth. They are a team that thrives on scoring goals. Some have even predicted the Oilers to go to the final or\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">even<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> win the Stanley Cup.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For the Canucks, being the underdogs is fine. Every sport has underdogs. An underdog beating the favoured team is always a good story. After all, it is the premise of many sports films.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Being underestimated is never a bad thing. In hockey and other aspects of life, when someone\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is underestimated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it should make them stronger. There is more motivation and more desire to prove people wrong. After all,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of the best feelings anyone can have.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Canucks Have Been Underdogs Before<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Well<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0technically, they still are\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">especially<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with Demko out. As mentioned last week, the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/04\/30\/vancouver-canucks-their-resiliency\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Canucks were resilien<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t in their six-game series win over the Nashville Predators. It wasn&#8217;t easy\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0they found ways to win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vancouver has\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been doubted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0many times already. They\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were projected<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to be Wild Card playoff team at the beginning of the season. N<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">obody<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> expected them to have the regular season they had and be where they are now. Even after their hot start, doubters were saying the Canucks and their PDO would regress. Well, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JFreshHockey\/status\/1779703677550219465\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the PDO did regress<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the Canucks did kind of fall off since the All-Star break\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it wasn&#8217;t a massive negative regression <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> they still finished in the top ten in the NHL&#8217;s standings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The pressure will be on the Oilers. With them favoured to win the series and go deeper into the post-season, the pressure on them is hot. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s also the ninth season of the dynamic duo\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that is McDavid<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and Draisaitl.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0They only have been past round two once\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that was in 2022 when they got swept by the Colorado Avalanche, who\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> course went on to win the Stanley Cup. Another early playoff exit would bring more doubt to the Oilers and many would wonder if McDavid and Draisaitl would <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">have doubts about<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0staying in Edmonton longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Embracing the Underdog Role<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s not going to be an easy series for both teams. The Oilers will try to outwit the Canucks with their offence. The Canucks and their emphasis on structure will try to throw the Oilers off their game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You might\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bring up the fact<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that Vancouver swept the regular season series against Edmonton. That means nothing in the playoffs. The Winnipeg Jets beat the Colorado Avalanche three times in the regular season\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but bowed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> out in five games to them in the playoffs. The<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10478037\/edmonton-oilers-vancouver-canucks-regular-season-losses\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Oilers themselves are even tired of hearing about the regular season games against the Canucks.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Canucks and their fans should embrace being the underdog. As mentioned earlier, there is nothing wrong with being underestimated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a series that could have fireworks and be a classic. Don&#8217;t be surprised if it goes six or seven games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI love\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being doubted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/canucks-should-embrace-underdog-role-against-oilers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said Canucks Head Coach <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tocchri01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Tocchet<\/a> after an optional practice on Sunday via Kevin Woodley of NHL.Com. \u201c<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the start of the year, if you asked, \u2018Is Vancouver going to make the playoffs?\u2019 A lot of people said no or a bubble team. So, we were underdogs there. As the season went on, when are they going to fall? Now, same thing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">People said the Preds are going to win.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8230;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0I\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0think we kind of like that underdog role\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I think<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0players should embrace it.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0I really do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Embracing the doubters is\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">great<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
