The Sharks had a difficult 2023-24 NHL regular season finishing dead last with 47 points. That was five less than second last place, the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks will receive the second overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s draft contains a clear first-overall pick in Boston University forward <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/04\/03\/macklin-celebrini-scouting-report\/\" target=\"_self\">Macklin Celebrini<\/a>. He has been rated as the top prospect, pretty well unanimously, and for some time. Furthermore, listed below are our picks as Last Word for the top-five rated prospects heading into the draft. Back a few weeks ago, San Jose\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sanjosehockeynow.com\/san-jose-sharks-minnesota-wild-game-notes-80\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">clinched the best odds<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of receiving the first overall pick in the NHL draft following a 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">April,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a013th. The Sharks finished the season at 19-52-9 this season.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will mark San Jose&#8217;s first time drafting first overall in their franchise&#8217;s history. It is interesting that Celebrini&#8217;s dad, Rick, has a connection to the area&#8217;s sports scene. He is the NBA&#8217;s Golden State Warriors Vice President of Player Health and Performance. Not a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bad<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0career for raising a kid who is a high-performance athlete.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/whc\/article\/celebrini-fantilli-dropped-from-canadas-roster-for-world-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One note on Celebrini from today<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as well as fellow Canadian young\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">star,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fantiad01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Fantilli<\/a>, both are injured. The Team Canada World Championship roster will not contain either star\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in its lineup<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rick Celebrini Pulling for Sharks To Draft Macklin Celebrini\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j60-qiSbzYg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Hawks came in with the second-best odds of obtaining the first pick and will finish second. The Hawks won last year&#8217;s NHL Draft Lottery and selected rookie phenom\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bedarco01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor Bedard<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Chicago finished the NHL season on a 6-game losing streak. Moreover, from last year, even though the odds\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were stacked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0against them, Chicago got the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/blackhawks\/news\/news-blackhawks-receive-odds-for-2023-nhl-draft-lottery-343608798\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">first pick<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with only 11.5% odds. They also got the first pick in 2007 with 8.1% odds and drafted\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kanepa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Kane<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are still<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0plenty of great picks available within the top five, depending on their specific needs.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Anaheim Ducks<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/04\/14\/anaheim-ducks-sign-top-prospect-to-elc\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Anaheim Ducks<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> came into the NHL Draft Lottery with the third-best odds and will select third. Anaheim finished at 27-50-5, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">which is<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> far better than Chicago and San Jose. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Anaheim has not had much success in draft lotteries in past years\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0them having the best odds to land the first overall pick last season and falling to the second pick, selecting Swedish player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlsle01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Carlsson<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/04\/15\/columbus-blue-jackets-college-prospect-gavin-brindley-signs-elc\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will select fourth in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. Coming into the lottery, the Jackets <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were not able to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0move up one spot and land the third overall pick\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">so<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the chances of them landing the fourth, fifth, or sixth pick seemed likely. Moreover, t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will be a big draft for a Columbus team that has been treading water for the past few\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">seasons,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0despite a collection of talented young players.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will also be the first selection for a new Blue Jackets front office following\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kekalja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarmo Kek\u00e4l\u00e4inen<\/a>&#8216;s<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0firing in February.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Montreal Canadiens<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Montreal Canadiens will pick fifth in the upcoming draft, one spot ahead of the Utah Hockey Franchise. Utah will\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">simply<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0take the same slot that Arizona would&#8217;ve qualified in. Montreal was tight in the standings\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">both<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/04\/18\/ottawa-senators-2023-24-season-recap-the-award-variation\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ottawa Senators<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2024\/04\/18\/board-of-governors-have-voted-in-arizona-coyotes-relocation\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arizona Coyotes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to end the season.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">both<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Ottawa and Arizona finished the year strong\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">which<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0gave<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Montreal more cushion down in the standings.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Montreal couldn&#8217;t\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">have leap-frogged<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Columbus in the lottery, but they could&#8217;ve fallen back.
