It is a widely known thing, that the Senators would love to add a right-hand shot defenceman. Their play of late has been strong, but it is well documented they would like to switch things up. For example, it would be someone to play alongside seven-year NHL veteran Thomas Chabot. He still longs for the days of playing with partners the likes of Dylan DeMelo or Cody Ceci. Neither would be considered standouts, but solid, big in stature, and defensive stalwarts. Furthermore, they simply gave Chabot the confidence to go for a skate, which he can do so, so beautifully.

The Ottawa Senators Always Seem Entranced in NHL Trade Rumours

As for the rumours regarding the Ottawa Senators themselves, the source is none other than the notorious Elliotte Friedman. Now, probably Friedman himself would admit, these rumours may originate from a source of self-speculation. Regardless, he is one of the most respected sources, and when he talks, people listen. As such, on Friedman’s latest edition of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, he was adding proverbial gas to the fire.

The Senators Do Need a Top-Four Right Hand Shot Defenceman

Friedman reiterated the Ottawa Senators rumours of their interest in a right-hand shot defenceman. It all started as he was discussing the great Erik Karlsson. The three-time Norris Trophy winner, Erik Karlsson, who played nine seasons with the Sens.

Why Would Pittsburgh Even Entertain the Thought?

Initially, Friedman was discussing the prospect that Pittsburgh may want to get rid of him. Firstly, the team has not turned their fortunes around as was hoped his acquisition would help inspire. Secondly, and more for show, but not unimportant, he earns more than Sidney Crosby. For both these reasons, there is some sense the thought process is there to want to move him. One issue that would invariably come up, is the salary aspect. A team, especially like that in the Sens situation up against the cap, you’d believe would want some salary retained. Conversely, given Kyle Dubas being fairly new in his role with Pittsburgh as President of Hockey Operations might be relevant. It is unlikely that he will put the team in a difficult situation by putting too much against the cap.

From the Ottawa Senators, a lot of trade rumours for a right-hand shot defenceman make sense. Not to mention, from the Senators perspective with Karlsson is the Daniel Alfredsson connection. Alfie would love anything to be reunited with the infamous number 65.

Additionally, on the Podcast, Friedman went on to add that Chris Tanev was still in play. It was thought the Sens had already made a push for him and were unable to land the 34-year-old’s services. However, there is still the offseason and there is no reason to think the Senators do not have a fighting chance.

Can the Senators Grow Within or Is an External Add a Foregone Conclusion?

Friedman did raise some interesting points on the Senators overall situation. One quote was from a theory by Craig Simpson. His rule goes something like, “Beware of teams that play well when games don’t matter”. On the other hand, if the Senators continue to do well, how much do they even need to change? Even still they’d like to add a right D. Finally, one more question to ponder for Senator fans, is the possible emergence (finally) of Jacob Bernard-Docker. So, how much are these rumours from around the NHL on the Ottawa Senators just for fodder, and how many are logical?

Main photo: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

As we approach the 2024 NHL trade deadline, the NHL rumour mill is on high alert, and the Ottawa Senators find themselves in that discussion.
