Poehling was set to become an RFA in the offseason, so the two-year extension prevents that from happening. The deal sees Poehling earn $1.9 Million per season. Also, earlier today, the Flyers General Manager Daniel Briere announced another signing, extending forward Owen Tippett for eight years. For the Flyers, these are moves for the future, locking up younger players who have proven themselves.

The Philadelphia Flyers Are Happy as Ryan Poehling Re-Signs with the Club

Hearing Ryan Poehling has a 2-year contract extension with the #LetsGoFlyers

— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) January 26, 2024

As Ryan Poehling re-signs, the Flyers are keeping a reliable depth piece around for a couple of seasons. Poehling has played parts of five seasons in the NHL, totaling 182 games played. This season sees him well on pace to reach offensive career marks. Right now, his career-high is 17 points. This year he has 14 through 44 games played. Furthermore, this is while playing 13:20 of ice-time per night, which is also a career-best stat, well above his career-average of 12:04. Poehling is a very responsible player, as he has more career takeaways with 69 than giveaways at 41. Also, his face-off percentage is up this year, over 2.3% from his career average. These are the types of intangibles that make Poehling a relied-upon bottom-six guy.

What Do These Recent Moves Mean for the Philadelphia Flyers

For Philadelphia, this is an example of Briere rewarding his players. Last season the Flyers who did have a couple of costly injuries, found themselves in third last in the Eastern Conference. In contrast, with a healthy lineup, and a hot goaltender, the Flyers are showing that they have a well-built roster. The Flyers are currently third in the Metropolitan Division. Role players like Poehling or Tippett are definitely a reason why they have been successful. Thus, signing them to mutually beneficial contracts, before intense offseason negotiations take place, is a win-win scenario.

Main photo: Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Keep the good times rolling for the Philadelphia Flyers as Centre Ryan Poehling re-signs with the club.
