The Golden Knights <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/10\/06\/puck-drop-preview-2023-24-vegas-golden-knights\/\" target=\"_self\">relied on that experienced core<\/a> for much of their Stanley Cup run last season, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/37850136\/knights-jonathan-marchessault-wins-conn-smythe-playoff-mvp\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marchessault winning the Conn Smythe Trophy<\/a> as the team\u2019s MVP. However, through two games of the 2023-24 season, it\u2019s the newcomers who have impressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Vegas Golden Knights Newcomers Impress Early\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Injury Bug Bites Early<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hockey has been back for three days, but the Golden Knights are already a bit beat up. Defencemen Alec Martinez and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/whiteza01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Whitecloud<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/hockey\/news\/golden-knights-alec-martinez-suffers-upper-body-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">both injured in the pre-season<\/a> and are expected to be week-to-week. Forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carriwi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Carrier<\/a> went out with an injury in the first game of the season, and forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howdebr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Howden<\/a> was suspended for two games after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/38636262\/knights-brett-howden-suspended-2-games-check-head-kraken-brandon-tanev\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">illegal check to the head on Seattle&#8217;s Brandon Tanev<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All of this meant that Vegas went into their second game of the season down four mainstays in the lineup. However, the replacements stepped up to the plate in a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the forward side of things, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dorofpa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavel Dorofeyev<\/a> replaced Brett Howden on the third line beside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/karlswi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Karlsson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/amadimi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Amadio<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rondbjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonas Rondbjerg<\/a> slotted onto the fourth line with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/royni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicolas Roy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/koleske01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keegan Kolesar<\/a>. Both were noticeable throughout the game, matching their more seasoned linemates easily and looking comfortable out on the ice. Both players recorded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knightsonice.com\/depth-scoring-leads-golden-knights-to-victory-as-vegas-defeats-sharks-4-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">primary assist on the night<\/a>. Rondbjerg made a strong pass through the neutral zone to find Nicolas Roy for Vegas\u2019 second goal. Dorofeyev set up another newcomer, defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pachabr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brayden Pachal<\/a>, two minutes into the third period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rondbjerg and Dorofeyev, the most important thing is showing that they can handle the minutes on the ice with the big boys. Dorofeyev had seven goals in 18 games with the Golden Knights last season. Rondbjerg played just thirteen games with the big club last year, and has just two career goals. We can roll four lines. You know anybody\u2019s able to score some goals. We can rely on that, for sure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Young Defencemen Creating Offence\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegas also had two young defencemen create opportunities on the ice. Brayden Pachal had the fourth goal for Vegas, playing on the third pair in place of Zach Whitecloud. The 24-year-old ripped a wrist shot from the right side for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/sports\/goldenknights\/golden-knights-celebrate-defensemans-milestone-2921028\/?utm_campaign=widget&amp;utm_medium=latest&amp;utm_source=staff_ben-gotz&amp;utm_term=Golden%20Knights%20celebrate%20defenseman%E2%80%99s%20milestone\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first goal of his NHL career<\/a>. Nicholas Hague also had a goal and an assist while filling in for an injured Alec Martinez on Vegas\u2019 top pair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The injuries to Martinez and Whitecloud are projected to be more long-term than the losses on the forward side. The strong play from Hague and Pachal should give Golden Knights fans hope for the next few weeks. However, Alex Pietrangelo was hit with a shot late in the third period, and left the ice bleeding. It will be a tough ask to replace three of Vegas\u2019 top defenders if Pietrangelo has to miss any ice time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nic Hague\u2019s shot deflected off a defender\u2019s sticks and hit Alex Pietrangelo up high.<\/p>\n<p>He was bleeding. And for the Vegas Golden Knights newcomers, they\u2019ve been great. For a team that has been criticized in the past for their willingness to trade away prospects and draft picks, they\u2019ve managed to nurture diamonds in the rough and turn them into the players that are needed at any given time. Players like Zach Whitecloud, <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomplo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Logan Thompson<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\">, and Brayden Pachal have all gone <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/sports\/goldenknights\/golden-knights-celebrate-defensemans-milestone-2921028\/?utm_campaign=widget&amp;utm_medium=latest&amp;utm_source=staff_ben-gotz&amp;utm_term=Golden%20Knights%20celebrate%20defenseman%E2%80%99s%20milestone\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">undrafted<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\">, earning their playing time by simply putting in the work.
