Most hockey fans can instantly tell you a great player by the number they wear on their back. There are many different stories about how players became associated with the famous numbers. Many odd and interesting facts surround these numbers as well. As we count down the start of the 2023-24 NHL season, we take a look at the story behind the numbers. Today we continue with sweater number 8. Keep up to date with the series everyday until the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.<\/p>\n<h2>Behind the Sweater Number: 8<\/h2>\n<h3>Early 8s<\/h3>\n<p>According to Hockey Reference, 453 players have worn sweater number 8 since since jersey records were kept in the 1950-51 season. However, it does not list any players before then that may have taken the number. All of the Original Six teams had someone wearing the number during that 1950-51 season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithsi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sid Smith<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/09\/21\/toronto-maple-leafs-top-prospects-2023-edition\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> netted 30 goals in that campaign. Hall of Famers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mosiebi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Mosienko<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stanlal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allan Stanley<\/a> each had the number for that year as well.<\/p>\n<p>The number eight has been synonymous with a team\u2019s top scorer or playmaker. There have been a number of great players to don sweater number 8 over the years. The lower numbers in the countdown will feature on defence, but eight is considered to be a mostly forward-based number.<\/p>\n<h3>Cameos<\/h3>\n<p>There are always a number of players that wore sweater number 8 that would go onto have decent to good careers. However, these were with other numbers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/domiti01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tie Domi<\/a> had number eight to start his second stint with the Maple Leafs. Fellow enforcer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grimsst01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stu Grimson<\/a> ended his career in Nashville with that number. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kesseph01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Kessel<\/a> took the number eight with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/10\/02\/2023-vegas-golden-knights-top-prospects\/\" target=\"_self\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lecavvi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Lecavalier<\/a> actually started off with number eight before settling on the number four.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/ramagro01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Ramage<\/a> had the number for two seasons in Toronto. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shattke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Shattenkirk<\/a> donned the number with the Colorado Avalanche. Miracle on Ice player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/silkda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Silk<\/a> had the number for a season with Detroit. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tkachke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Tkachuk<\/a> carried the numeral with the Atlanta Thrashers at the end of his career. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitnra01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Whitney<\/a> wore the number in the 1997-98 season with the Edmonton Oilers.<\/p>\n<h3>The Great Eight<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a> is the choice for the best to wear sweater number 8. The Russian came onto the scene in the 2005-06 season and won the Calder Trophy with a great rookie season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/08\/27\/nhl-rumours-maple-leafs-capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>. Ovechkin netted 52 goals and recorded 106 points. The left winger has never scored less than 24 goals in a season and is chasing down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>&#8216;s goal-scoring record.<\/p>\n<p>Ovechkin finally got his Stanley Cup in 2018 and has amassed nine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a> Trophies, thee Hart Trophies, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rossar01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Ross<\/a> Trophy and was a 12-time All-Star. He<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2022\/12\/15\/alex-ovechkin-gordie-howe-goals-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> took the number eight<\/a> because his mother, Tatania, was a two-time gold-medal winning women&#8217;s basketball player. His mom wore the number eight with the Soviet basketball team and it was a natural number for him.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Great 8s<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/neelyca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Neely<\/a> was a great number eight, but injuries cut short his career. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/selante01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teemu Selanne<\/a> was known to be a great 13, but also had a solid career in the number eight sweater. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larioig01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Igor Larionov<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murphla01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Murphy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/plageba01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barclay Plager<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hodgeke01,hodgeke02&amp;search=Ken+Hodge&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Hodge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/recchma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Recchi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duffdi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dick Duff<\/a> were just a number of players that wore the number eight.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of players that are currently putting up great showings with the number. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/makarca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cale Makar<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/troubja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Trouba<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/burnsbr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brent Burns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/doughdr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drew Doughty<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dumoubr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Dumoulin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/garlaco01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conor Garland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/werenza01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-10-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Werenski<\/a> are each wearing the number at the moment.
