Most hockey fans can instantly tell you a great player by the number they wear on their back. There are many different stories about how players became associated with the famous numbers. Many odd and interesting facts surround these numbers as well. As we count down the start of the 2023-24 NHL season, we take a look at the story behind the numbers. Today we continue with sweater number 16. Keep up to date with the series everyday until the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.<\/p>\n<h2>Behind the Sweater Number: 16<\/h2>\n<h3>The First 16s<\/h3>\n<p>According to Hockey Reference, 434 players have worn sweater number 16 since since jersey records were kept in the 1950-51 season. However, it does not list any players before then that may have taken the number. Hockey Reference lists all of the Original Six with at least one player in that number. Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lachel01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elmer Lach<\/a> had the best season with 21 goals and 45 points with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/09\/22\/puck-drop-preview-2023-24-montreal-canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> in that season.<\/p>\n<p>As we draw closer to the end of the countdown, we\u2019ll focus more the big-name players that wore the number. We\u2019ll also give more attention to the players that briefly wore sweater number 16. This series will also take a look at the future of the number and who may carry the digits.<\/p>\n<h3>Cameos<\/h3>\n<p>There are always a number of players that wore sweater number 16 that would go onto have decent to good careers. However, these were with other numbers. Legendary Habs coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/blaketo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toe Blake<\/a> had 16 before settling into the six sweater. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boivile01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Boivin<\/a> started off his Hall of Famer career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 16. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/courtru01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russ Courtnall<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dahleul01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ulf Dahlen<\/a> also had 16 for one season in their respective careers. Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilbero01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Gilbert<\/a> donned the 16 before finding his trademark number seven. Future donut magnate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hortoti01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Horton<\/a> had 16 for a pair of seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mooredi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dickie Moore<\/a> had sweater number 16 with Toronto. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stonema01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Stone<\/a> wore 16 with the Ottawa Senators. Another Hall of Famer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/u\/ullmano01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norm Ullman<\/a> had the number for three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.<\/p>\n<h3>The Golden Brett<\/h3>\n<p>The battle for best of sweater number 16 was an intense one. There were players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkbo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Clarke<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richahe01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henri Richard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a> and Pat Lafontaine just to name a few. However, Hull gets the edge by way of his 741 career goals. Brett&#8217;s father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a>, actually started his career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 16. However, he would shift to number nine and then seven. The elder Hull would end his career with the Hartford Whalers in 16.<\/p>\n<p>Brett would start his NHL career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/09\/17\/nhl-rumours-flames-jets-hockey\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a> before being traded to the St. Louis Blues. The younger Hull would finally take off in the Arch City when he scored 86 goals in the 1990-91 season. Hull was putting up numbers that even his father would be envious of. However, Stanley Cup success would elude the younger Hull. Brett eventually got his cup with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/09\/16\/2023-24-puck-drop-preview-dallas-stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars<\/a> and in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>He would change numbers a few times to nine, 22 and 15. However, his success as 16 was one of the best stretches as a player. Hull would let <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/verbepa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Verbeek<\/a> take 16 in Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/285229-brett-hall-of-fame-hull-paying-homage-to-an-nhl-legend\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and take 22.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Other 16s and the Future<\/h3>\n<p>As we mentioned, we can&#8217;t ignore greats like Richard, Clarke, Dionne and Lafontaine. All four are Hall of Fame players, but there are a number of players that great careers in sweater number 16. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindetr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Linden<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/holikbo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Holik<\/a> had a long careers in the number 16. Another Hall of Famer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/goulemi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michel Goulet<\/a> had 16 for many seasons. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/konstvl01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vladimir Konstantinov<\/a> had his career tragically cut short in a limo accident, but was a great 16.<\/p>\n<p>The future looks bright with players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Marner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barkoal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-24_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aleksander Barkov<\/a> donning the number.
