Most hockey fans can instantly tell you a great player by the number they wear on their back. There are many different stories about how players became associated with the famous numbers. Many odd and interesting facts surround these numbers as well. As we count down the start of the 2023-24 NHL season, we take a look at the story behind the numbers. Today we continue with sweater number 18. Keep up to date with the series everyday until the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.<\/p>\n<h2>Behind the Sweater Number: 18<\/h2>\n<h3>The First 18s<\/h3>\n<p>According to Hockey Reference, 443 players have worn sweater number 19 since since jersey records were kept in the 1950-51 season. However, it does not list any players before then that may have taken the number. Hockey Reference lists all of the Original Six with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leswito01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Leswick<\/a> of the New York Rangers was the scorer in number 18 with 15 goals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mosdeke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Mosdell<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/09\/22\/puck-drop-preview-2023-24-montreal-canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> was the leading point-getter with 31 that season.<\/p>\n<p>As we draw closer to the end of the countdown, we\u2019ll focus more the big-name players that wore the number. We\u2019ll also give more attention to the players that briefly wore sweater number 18. This series will also take a look at the future of the number and who may carry the digits.<\/p>\n<h3>Cameos<\/h3>\n<p>There are always a number of players that wore sweater number 18 that would go onto have decent to good careers. However, these were with other numbers. Builder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/allenke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Allen<\/a> had this number along with 19 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/09\/17\/puck-drop-preview-2023-24-detroit-red-wings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. Hall of Famer coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arboual01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Arbour<\/a> wore the number for a season each in Detroit and Toronto. Another great coach in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/blaketo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toe Blake<\/a> wore the number with the Habs before the bench. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/domima01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Domi<\/a> wore the number for his short time in Dallas. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilmodo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Gilmour<\/a> started his Hall of Famer career with the St. Louis Blues in sweater number 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hawerda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dale Hawerchuk<\/a> ended his playing career with the Philadelphia Flyers in 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larioig01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Igor Larionov<\/a> started his North American career in 18 with Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/linseke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Linseman<\/a> also ended his career with Flyers in 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nieuwjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Nieuwendyk<\/a> started his playing career with 18 before switching to 25 in Calgary. Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oreewi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie O&#8217;Ree<\/a> also had 18 for one season with Boston. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pronoma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Pronovost<\/a> tried 18 before settling on sweater number three with Detroit. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/recchma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Recchi<\/a>&#8216;s one season with the Carolina Hurricanes was in 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shanabr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Shanahan<\/a> finished out his career in New Jersey with 18.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-18-denis-savard\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/savarde01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denis Savard<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The choice for best to wear sweater number 18 is Denis Savard, who<a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3654913\/2022\/10\/28\/nhl99-denis-savard\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> had five 100-point seasons<\/a>. Savard is in third place for points in Blackhawks franchise history behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mikitst01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stan Mikita<\/a>. The Pointe Gatineau, Quebec native started his career in 1980-81. He was a consistent 20-goal scorer with the Blackhawks for a number of seasons. However, it would take a move to the Canadiens to finally get his hands on a Stanley Cup. Savard may have been near the end of his career, but he helped his team win the Cup.<\/p>\n<p>He was given the number in Chicago by trainer Lou Varga according to Scott Morrison&#8217;s book By the Numbers. Savard&#8217;s cousin, Jean, had the number with the Quebec Remparts. He would switch to nine in Tampa Bay before a return to Chicago in the 1994-95 season.<\/p>\n<h3>Other 18s and the Future<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/savarse01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serge Savard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tayloda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Taylor<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/westfed01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Westfall<\/a> were other great players that donned sweater number 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hossama01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marian Hossa<\/a> had a long career and recently had a testimonial game in Europe. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/maltbki01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirk Maltby<\/a> was a workhorse in Detroit with the number 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nealja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Neal<\/a> was also productive for a number of years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/palaton01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ondrej Palat<\/a> was part of the Tampa Bay recent run before switching to New Jersey. Let&#8217;s also not forget <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staalma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Staal<\/a> and Dave Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>Younger players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/druryja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Drury<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/newhoal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-22_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Newhook<\/a> will be players that can carry on the legacy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo by: B.
