Most hockey fans can instantly tell you a great player by the number they wear on their back. There are many different stories about how players became associated with the famous numbers. Many odd and interesting facts surround these numbers as well. As we count down the start of the 2023-24 NHL season, we take a look at the story behind the numbers. Today we continue with sweater number 27. Keep up to date with the series everyday until the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.<\/p>\n<h2>Behind the Sweater Number: 27<\/h2>\n<h3>The First 27s<\/h3>\n<p>According to Hockey Reference, 386 players have worn sweater number 27 since since jersey records were kept in the 1950-51 season. However, it does not list any players before then that may have taken the number. Hockey Reference lists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/girarke01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Girard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nykolmi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Nykoluk<\/a> both of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2023\/08\/30\/toronto-maple-leafs-head-coach-sheldon-keefe-signs-extension\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> to first don the digits. Nykoluk wore the number for 32 games that season while Girard only had it for three games. Another Leafs player would take the number the next season, but we will get to him more a little bit later.<\/p>\n<p>The first non-Leafs player to wear sweater number 27 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kurteor01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orland Kurtenbach<\/a> with the Boston Bruins. This was during the 1961-62 season, where he played in eight games. Kurtenbach would move onto the number seven and 25.<\/p>\n<h3>Cameos<\/h3>\n<p>There are always a number of players that wore sweater number 27 that would go onto have decent to good careers. However, these were with other numbers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parisjp01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.P. Parise<\/a> started off his career with the Bruins as 27 for two seasons. Future NHL general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergema01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Bergevin<\/a> had sweater number 27 with the Detroit Red Wings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bertuto01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Bertuzzi<\/a> was 27 for his first number with the Vancouver Canucks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brindro01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Brind&#8217;Amour<\/a> was 27 for the first part of his tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=greenmi03,greenmi02&amp;search=Mike+Green&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Green<\/a> ended his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers in the 27 sweater. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamontr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis Hamonic<\/a> had the number for his two seasons in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lapoigu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lapointe<\/a> had the number for a season with the Bruins. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/larsore01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reed Larson<\/a> had the number with the Oilers for one season. Czech Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nedomva01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">V\u00e1clav Nedomansk\u00fd<\/a> wore the number for a season with the St. Louis Blues. Hall of Fame builders in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/patricr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Patrick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rutheji01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Rutherford<\/a> also had the sweater 27. Future broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/olczyed01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Olczyk<\/a> wore sweater number 27 with the Pittsburgh Penguins.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/niedesc01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Niedermayer<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>There have been plenty of talented players to wear sweater number 27, but Scott Niedermayer likely has the biggest trophy case. His honours started back in the WHL when he won the Seaman and Stafford Smythe trophies with the Kamloops Blazers. The Edmonton native would continue to rack up the wins in his professional and international careers. Niedermayer collected two Olympic gold medals for Team Canada and a World Junior Championship. He&#8217;d also win four Stanley Cups as well as the Norris Trophy and the Conn Smythe Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>The former third overall pick in the 1991 NHL Draft was one of the best defencemen of his era with the New Jersey Devils and the Anaheim Ducks. Him and his brother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/niedero01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Niedermayer<\/a>, were one of the most formidable brother combinations for their era. Scott had his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/schwei-27-scott-niedermayer-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">number retired by the Devils<\/a> in 2011.<\/p>\n<h3>Other 27s and the Future<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sittlda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darryl Sittler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hextaro01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Hextall<\/a> are two great 27s that come to mind when thinking of the number. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mahovfr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Mahovlich<\/a> was one of the first famous players to wear the number in the 1960s. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/corsosh01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shayne Corson<\/a> carved out a solid career with the number. Former Miracle on Ice player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Christian<\/a> also wore the number for a good part of his career. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kovalal01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Kovalev<\/a> was a part of the New York Rangers winning the 1994 Stanley Cup. Glenn Murray also recorded a good career with the number. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nummite01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teppo Numminen<\/a> played in nearly 1,400 games. NHL 94 cheat code <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roenije01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Roenick<\/a> wore the number for many seasons. Mustache purveyor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/snepsha01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harold Snepsts<\/a> played in over 1,000 games as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pietral01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Pietrangelo<\/a> wore the number with the Blues and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/martial01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-09-13_hr\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alec Martinez<\/a> carried the number with the Los Angeles Kings.
