In 39 games, he has scored four goals and added 11 assists for 15 points.

In 48 games with the Maple Leafs last season, Borgman scored three goals and added eight assists for 11 points.

The 23-year-old Borgman originally signed with the Maple Leafs as a free agent on May 16, 2017, after his stellar SHL campaign with HV71 where he was named Rookie of the Year.

What This Means for the Future

Signing Borgman is a depth signing that is much needed for the Maple Leafs. Borgman is currently thought to be the Leafs third best defensive prospect after the club moved Sean Durzi to the Los Angeles Kings in the deal for Jake Muzzin. He was ranked ninth overall on Last Words Ben Kerr’s Top Shelf Prospect list for the Maple Leafs.

Borgman could potentially see some time with the Maple Leafs this season with recent injuries to Jake Gardiner and Travis Dermott.

Borgman possesses good puck moving abilities and is a decent skater. He has a physical element to his game and is not afraid to jump up a make a big hit. However, this sometimes results in him getting caught out of position. His game needs to be fine-tuned, which is expected. Defenceman tend to take a little longer to develop and transitioning to the North American game isn’t always easy. He does have the tools to become an everyday NHL player.

Borgman will most likely continue his development in the AHL with the Marlies next season. However, Borgman will bring some healthy competition to training camp this coming fall.
Embed from Getty Images

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have signed defenceman Andreas Borgman to a one-year contract extension.
