They believed Tomas Tatar was their guy and gave up three draft picks to acquire him, including a first and a second.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/02\/26\/tomas-tatar-traded-golden-knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bad trade deadline deal<\/a> for the Golden Knights. Tatar wasn\u2019t really a factor for the Golden Knights during their playoff run. (Photo by Maddie Meyer\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the biggest acquisitions for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> at the 2018 trade deadline was trading for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/plekato01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tomas Plekanec<\/strong><\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Leafs got Plekanec along with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/baunky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Baun<\/a><\/strong>. Montreal added\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rycheke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kerby Rychel<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/valieri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rinat Valiev<\/strong><\/a> and a second-round pick (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/316535\/jacob-olofsson\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Olofsson<\/a><\/strong>) in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>As we all know, Plekanec did not do much in helping Leafs get over the hump. After losing in the first round, Plekanec quickly re-signed with the Canadiens on July 1st, 2018. (Photo by Claus Andersen\/Getty Images) *** Local Caption *** Rick Nash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> had to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/02\/25\/rick-nash\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">give up five assets to acquire Rick Nash<\/a> at the 2018 trade deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Nash scored five points for the Bruins in 12 playoff games but failed to help the Bruins get past the second round.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it was bad trade deadline move by the Bruins, as it was the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/01\/11\/rick-nash-retires\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last time we saw Nash play in the NHL.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fair to say that the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> did not win that trade by a huge margin. They did a nice job in getting what they could for Nash.<\/p>\n<p>However, we should keep a close eye on the first round pick. But as we all know, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> once again failed to get past the second round that year.<\/p>\n<p>This was a<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/02\/27\/kevin-shattenkirk-traded-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> bad deal for the Capitals<\/a>, it was a huge swing and a miss for a team desperately trying to win a <strong>Stanley Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After his short stint with the Capitals, they lost him for nothing as Shattenkirk opted to sign with the Rangers in the off-season.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> did well with their 2017 first round pick. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/06\/23\/brayden-schenn-traded-st-louis-blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">They were able to use it to acquire Brayden Schenn<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> in the summer.<\/p>\n<h2>2017: Brian Boyle Trade to Toronto<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42948\" style=\"width: 612px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42948\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/03\/gettyimages-Brian-Boyle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/03\/gettyimages-Brian-Boyle.jpg 612w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/03\/gettyimages-Brian-Boyle-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TORONTO, ON &#8211; APRIL 8 &#8211; Brian Boyle of the Toronto Maple Leafs (24) moves the puck up ice during the 1st period of NHL action as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Air Canada Centre on April 8, 2017. (Carlos Osorio\/Toronto Star via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Acquiring <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boylebr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Boyle<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> was another <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/02\/27\/brian-boyle-traded\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bad trade deadline deal<\/a> for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Boyle&#8217;s playoff experience was highly coveted, but he failed to score in the 26 games he played for the Leafs that season.<\/p>\n<p>The Leafs&#8217; playoff hopes were shortlived as they were eliminated by the Washinton Capitals in six games. Shortly after that, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/07\/01\/brian-boyle-signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boyle went on to sign<\/a> a two-year, $5.1 million contract with <strong>Eastern Conference<\/strong> rivals, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/froesby01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Byron Froese<\/strong><\/a> is no longer with the Tampa Bay organization. The Lightning used the second round pick in the trade to draft <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2018\/08\/16\/tampa-bay-lightning-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alexander Volkov.<\/strong><\/a> He seems to be developing nicely in the <strong>AHL<\/strong> right now.<\/p>\n<h2>2019 Trades Deadline Deals<\/h2>\n<p>It is still early but the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2019\/02\/23\/mats-zuccarello-traded\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars acquiring Mats Zuccarello<\/a> might turn out to be a very bad trade for the team.
